Valve Adjustment Problem

Hi All,

I have a 1995 T4R with 3VZ-E with 258,000 km (160,000 mi). I am doing a valve clearance check and adjustment.
I have several valves out of spec, following procedure from shop manual and using proper tools, I cannot remove the shims from the lifters. I can rotate the shims easily by finger but they will not pop out of the lifter.

Is there something I'm missing ?

Problem Solved

Hi All,

After more #$@#, it appears that the oil tension bond between lifter and shim was my problem. After working shim several dozen times with small screw driver it finally released. Why it didn't release last night doing same thing who knows..Temp diff ??

Now for some different shims.

I have found that the surest way to get a stuck part to release is to post a thread on the internet asking what the trick is to get it to release.

Actually the easiest way to get them out is with a magnet.

Yep, second this. A magnet works brilliantly!

When I was rebuilding my 3S-GTE engine a couple years ago; I had troubles getting the shims out. Didn't want to stick a screwdriver in there. So I gave up; went and played some Fallout 3 (hahaha), and while playing that I thought of trying a magnet. Worked perfectly.

As my new shims won't be in for several days and I have to do it all over again I'll be getting a stronger magnet.

I pulled the cams when I adjusted mine.. Made it 74 billion times easier.
