valve adjustment?!?!?

I was reading through a couple of old threads... it mentioned a valveadjustment was one of the ways to keep #6 from burning up.

So, noticing mine are tapping a little (not the injectors) I looked into getting an adjustment...

to the tune of $650!!!!!!!!!

I had no idea you had to pull the cams for a valveadjustment on the v6. Holy crap!

I'd do it myself if all of my tools weren't in storage.

Just wanted to complain. Any ideas for anything else I should do at the same time? T-belt + extras...

those valves are shim-over bucket and a pain in the ass to adjust..wouldnt recommend it unless youve done a valve train like that before...its a good time to do the water pump and timing belt while you are in there..

You do not have to pull the camshaft to reshim, and infact you will need the camshaft inplace to check all valve train lash.

And it's not THAT bad IF you have the right tools AND a backup vehicle for the week or so that yours will be down.

I origionally was told that I would not need the SST's to pull the shims. That was BS..lol

What I used to great success was a set of VW valve shim pullers, a set of allen wrenches to indext the shim down, a nut on some 40lb fishing line (to hold the bucket down but not the shim while you pull the shim), and some 45* bent, looong needle nose pliers. (to position the nut.)

As far as measurement tools, a micrometer and feeler gauges.

For pulling the intake plenum and remember what vacuum lines go were, PM me for the picture. I printed out a picture of a plenum devoid of lines, then as I removed vaccum lines I numbered the hoses and the corresponding vacuum port on the picture. Worked like a charm and took me 20 minutes to get everything replumed.

The biggest part of doing this is to be PATIENT and WRITE EVERYTHING DOWN!! I also individually bagged and labelled all shims that came out. This way I knew what went were, how thick the OEM shim was, what the valve lash was, and the proper size I needed to get.

You will most likely have to order the shims from toyota so that's a 2 or 3 day delay. Also be aware that you can reuse shims should they be appropriately sized for other locations...

I also took the opportunity to have the upper plenum cleaned up and ported. (EGR port had literally dumped a mountain of crap in the intake and it was about 10% occluded.)
