in doing this job, i've read that the coolant is drained. why? are there coolant hoses going through the plenum, throttle body, etc?

Yes, they go to the IAC.

You don't have to drain it. When you remove the coolant lines from under the TB you can plug them. You might lose less than an oz. of coolant. All years have an IAC. 2001 it is built into the TB.

don't even touch the cooling system.... just undo the 4 bolts that hold the throttle body on and set it aside. I have NEVER had a issue with reusing the throttle body gasket (just don't even touch it!) on ANYTHING. If it makes you feel better you could probably get one. DO replace the intake manifold gaskets... and don't forget the upper manifold splits apart and uses the same exact gasket for both halves.

also you can leave a few things connected on the manifold and just flop it out of the way...

Assuming this is a V6 anyway.

edit: in all fairness I do usually reuse the intake manifold gaskets unless they're paper. the rubber ones are usually OK to use again. never had an issue. 5vz uses metal gaskets.

I don't think I even removed the throttle body. I just pulled the upper intake out of the way with everything still on it (I did remove the intake tube from the throttle body).

I went ahead and removed the TB. It's a lot easier to clean off the truck. If you remove the upper and lower plenums it gives you a chance to clean them also. But you can simply lay the TB and plenum over and won't have to disconnect the entire assembly. I guess I'm too anal about cleaning up my engine bay. I like to clean everything before I put it back together. Removing the TB gives you a lot more room to navigate the valve cover into position

it is a 6 and i will replace gaskets. they are cheap anyway. thanks for all the insight guys. will jump on this soon! now being without work makes money get routed elsewhere.
