Valvoline Destroyed My Engine

I’ve never used an oil change service in my life on my personal rigs. I just don’t see the point…Why would I pay somebody to do something I can do? Worst part yet is you wait in line, to have them only drain and refill oil. Your paying more for less and taking more time to do it? The only damaged drains I’ve ever witnessed have all been caused by quick lube places.

If you absolutely have to use a service because, reasons, even if they’re lazy ones, at least go to a dealer or a reputable shop. Someone that will actually inspect the vehicle for other potential issues.
 
I was going to switch to a magnetic drain plug. Those valves are tempting but I be afraid of failure and loosing all my oil. I also use either a copper washer or get the toyota paper aluminum seal gasket fir the drain plug. Those seem to work very well.. :)

I agree - I was worried, too, but the lever takes a rather firm push and a turn to open. Extremely well-made. They are used on all kinds of heavy machinery worth orders of magnitude more than passenger vehicles. It's also well protected under an aftermarket skid plate. I used an OEM crush washer, I believe (memory fading). Won't be buying any more of those, if so. I'll be the guinea pig on these....

Lifetime repair/replace/refund warranty - starting to sound like a salesman - sry.

Cool. I became aware of these in a weird way - via a snail-mailer from my city offering a free Fumoto valve to reduce oil spillage into the gutter/storm drains for people doing oil changes in the street. Must have been targeted by zip code LOL. Used in on my 2nd Gen and bought one for my 3rd gen when I sold the 1991. No more issues with stripped plugs, messy draining, buying washers, etc. Set it and forget it. I'd like one on the transmission, too, but I don't think they make one with the correct thread pitch/depth/size or something.

Edit - to make matters worse (for purists), I'm running a K & N oil filter that I believe is "good for at least 10,000 miles" I won't wait that long, but I like that they have a 1" nut on them for easy removal.

You aren't the guinea pig, that's for sure. I put one on all of my cars (ok, not the Volt, but it needs an oil change like every 20k miles).

This includes my lowered cars with the drain valve 4" off the ground. Never had a problem, leak or issue in 15+ years now.

I also run a short bit of hose down out the skid plate hole for easy draining on the 4Runner. I just cut it to length so it *just* sneaks out of the hole. If the hose gets pulled off by a rock, I can replace it...

This has got me thinking....where is the best place to buy a brand new 5VZFE? I know it's possible to buy em, I spoke to a Toyota supplier in Florida once that had access to stock. Anybody else done this?

Cool, I certainly figured they were in use by some OGs here. This forum can be very OEM ONLY at times when it comes to engine plumbing and for good reason, but these valves are just great IMO.
 
Good information. :) I probably go to these valves with short hoses. I am curious if the 2nd gen Tacoma oil filter relocation kits will fit our 3rd gens? If they would. We could move the oil filters to the top of the engine and s run another house down through the skid. This would fix the oil spill issue from its current filter location.

I mean I'm definitely not familiar with Tacomas, but from the little I do know I don't see why they wouldn't. It may not line up as perfectly as intended but it should absolutely thread on and seal up to the housing. From there it would just be mounting which can always be solved with hose lengths and brackets...

Not sure. My 2009 tocums sport TRD came with a factory oil filter relocation. I bought it brand new. Being I use the sane filter on both. I figured they may be retrofitted to our 3td gens. As it's OEM factory I figured it's quality is alit better then the aftermarket. It's just a thought..

Yes this is why i refuse to have anyone EVER change the oil in any of my vehicles. A lot of people do not care about the quality of their work.

I second both of these things. Have had these valves on both my RAV4 and 4R for for a combined 7 years and have never had an issue--I'm not a rock crawler though. The only complaints I have are that the pan drains reeeeally slowly if the oil isn't warm, and that I'm not positive it lets everything out without removing the valve entirely which kind of defeats the purpose... I change my oil every 3-5k with full synthetic so I'm hoping there isn't too much sludge that's collecting in there. Next oil change, I'll probably just remove the valve entirely once it seems to be done draining to be sure--might be something I do every few oil changes.

I've also use those K&N filters but I swap em with every oil change which is probably overkill... I stopped buying them from Amazon since a lot of folks have reported being sent counterfeits.

Now if only someone could up with a solution to the oil spilling everywhere when I unscrew the filter...

Form-a-funnel, right under the filter. Leads the oil to drip right down to a pan, no drips on the diff, frame, skids, etc.

I'm so glad this forum exists. Thank you! I've been dropping my skids every time I change the oil because the oil dripping and pooling wherever it wants drives me nuts.
