Vandert/Bahndrvr's Single income 4 dependents Slow Build 4 sale now 0ct 6, 2017

Got the call quickly so took 4Runner for my dash and scheduled on Friday for my dash replacement , got there at 0815, here it is 19:30 on Saturday and have this in my driveway still....

Had a bunch of stuff planned this morning had too put off, and honestly a bit worried about getting it back tomorrow.... Memorial Day have plans as well, kinda pissed but can't be too pissed as it's a 14 year old vehicle getting a new dash for free.

They had this on the lot used though:

Update, it's now after closing on Sunday and it's still not done:/

The new dash

I'm officially protected again, put my skidplates back on and changed my oil as well!

Put passenger side fender liner back in and modified stock airbox to have the intake tube around 8-12 inches higher this is temp

Heat gun and reshape didn't work as well as I wanted:/

I'm the one on the left, this was my second Murph with vest in two days did one on Memorial Day then did one on Tuesday for the guy I'm posing with as a good buddy that's PCS'ing, he's a First Seargent and going to take over a Joint Spec Ops assignment at Ft Compton, I mean Ft Carson;)

Oh dug out some old patches, the coolest part is the Air Force and Name tapes both in BDU and DCU have seen combat with me:)

Have a bunch more I just need to dig out including the funny ones;)

Oh somewhat pissed as well didn't get my 4Runner back till Monday as in memorial day and had all kinds of plans that day, so it set me behind a bit. Then when I got it after 3 days the windshield had like sweat from the guy that installed it and could barely see it the window had to pull over and wipe it to see then took a few days to get some cleaner that would get it clean/clear. Throw on top of that last night was first night I drove at night and I have some lights out now..

Will be calling them now that I discovered this. Feel bad complaining after Toyota corporate took care of me but a bit pissed as well.

So,

REALLY, REALLY trying to go to this:

http://www.appalachiantoyotaroundup.org/

With that in mind - and my budget if I am going to go to this there are a few things that have to be done before I go:

Sliders
Rear Tire Carrier for Full size - will make and this is the extra I need to prioritize it
Speedo Correction - ABS isn't working right now and think the speedo being so far off may have something to do with this.
Wheel Bearings - Front immediately - rear when I do the next part.
Rear Locker - staying on stock gears for now - thinking a Spartan for around 190 with my discount and i can put in when I do the rear bearings and seals, would be a temp rear locker setup only until I do the gear swap but for this cost would make this trip alot more fun!
Snorkel and intake piping setup change
Stainless extended brake lines - fluid flush
Tranny Flush and fluid change

The above list is what creates the problem and why I may not be able to make it this year:(

The wheel bearings alone would kill my budget lol.

In all reality, the Stainless lines are necessary as the ABS issue is either from the speed being so off, or the possibility I kinked a line when flexing the rear out - haven't checked yet as coudl have simply pulled a sensor out in the rear as have ALOT more flex than stock and alot more height, easily 3 1/2 inches of height and probably 6-7" more droop than stock possibly more, sure this caused a problem as i wasn't paying attention when flexing to the max to make sure no tire rub...

Front wheel bearings are making noise, so need them sooner rather than later. I could see Wheel bearings, and brake lines happening really soon. Speedo healer falls into this as well.

Fathers day I'm hoping for money or the 4x4Innovations fab set for the rear tire carrier, then I only need the metal for fabbing and time.

Tranny flush will be justifiable to the wife as well but thats around 200 bucks minimum to have Toyota do it with the machine...

The issue is the rear locker - even a cheap Spartan, the gasket, and the oil for the rear - will be hard to come up with the funds for that - and with the 35's I feel this is necessary for hard trails so I don't kill my brakes from ATRAC, just using the front brakes with the rear being locked can do most trails my "pucker" factor would allow me to, but without I would kill my brakes I have no doubt.

Snorkel - would do the FJ90 or FJ100 Amazon setup - but thinking a cheap Tundra intake, then I have a specific filter setup I like, want to go with, and then run straight to the snorkel for better filtration and a bit more induction noise;-) Total would be around 150-175 for completely custom, other option is do the in cab snorkel setup which I'm Seriously considering and if i go that route will remove the silencer from the intake track and nothing more. Thoughts?

Be careful with the rear locker and your 35's, you rear diff will be the weak point. Out wheeling you will really want to avoid wheel spin and bouncing up and down on rocks.

You've probably seen it, but in detail my tire carrier build in my thread if you need ideas.

You mentioned the in cab snorkel, I assume you found the writeup on here for that? If you didn't see it, I might be able to find it for you.

For sliders, I have Stubb's HD-SKO with kickout, pretty much the cheapest option if you can get them welded on easy. They are also probably the longest sliders, so they are easy to weld too far forward and have them rub tires when you turn. You have 35's already so shouldn't be difficult to line them up.

I weld so will look at the Stubbs have really looked the trailgears are less than 200 shipped to my door as I have a coupon for them so leaving that way, they don't have kickout and with the lil's I don't mind the kickout as a step so may change routes!

Rear locker i would never run a spartan behind a v8 with the intention of it being for good, but for a while and a few trips I kinda hope to! I understand bouncing and breaking unfortunately, "when" I break another will be my 4th breakage lol. One thing I understand better than most is Toyotas have two major limiting factors for wheeling, weak ring and pinions and stupid weak lug bolts:/

In-cab snorkel I ran on a different vehicle in the past but do have the one on here, since will be cash strapped I may end up doing this one opposed to fender mounted one, time and budget will tell! Either way I plan on running the spectre closed in-line filter like I did on a few others. If your not familiar with it can edit and throw and link in.

I do have your rear tire carrier marked as well and like it only question I have is how did you get the curve on your bar, cut and weld for the angles or did you run it through a bender? I will probably use the same exact setup as yours to include late and hinge!

For my tire carrier, I bent the main tube with a hydraulic press at work a little every 4 inches down the length. Doesn't look super-professional up close but did the job. We probably have one of the large-radius tube benders at work come to think of it... but I'm happy with how the bend turned out.

I would recommend a vertically oriented rectangle tube instead of my thin-walled square tube for the main arm. Also, using one of those red-handled latches with rust-proof bumpers (stiff plastic) is probably the better way to go vs my original pin idea.

35's make a difference, of that I have no doubt. Could not do this with 285's and spacer in back, could not do this with 285's and the additional lift in back. Throw the 35's on and a bit of balls and walked right up:)

Pics of course do it no justice but it's a fun one!

This is from top of the little hill looking down:)

I do have to do more maint as my wheel bearings are loud, and have to do some break work, pretty sure I broke ABS sensors in the rear with the added flex and I didn't unclamp them:( Will hit a junkyard soon and try to find some so don't pay full price, typically they will just give them to you at these yards down here. While there have a few other things I want to grab as well.

I gave up the ghost and bought the piping for the internal snorkel mod, main reason it's raining a lot here in Florida these days, and my intake in the stock location is not cutting it with the modded fender liners, it's too exposed for my liking so going to run it to the cab, will still do further mods to the intake track like I planned and once done with that will probably do a full on external snorkel if it gets to loud but will be doing that hopefully this weekend, but have two graduates classes and midterms are next week so may be the following weekend:( Don't expect it to take long at all and I bought a 22 degree elbow in addition to the two 90's and the straight pipe so shouldn't have to heat and bend.

Still leaning towards the Spartan in the rear with the stock 3.73's as a fix for the 35's and killing my brakes with the larger tires and don't want to overheat the ATRAC so will let it work in the front only with the addition of the simple locker, need to do the rear wheel bearings, and would do at the same time as I have to pull the 3rd member to put the Spartan in. Re-gear is not in the cards for a while, quite a while as it's just so expensive and so many things are coming due that are costly. I haven't had tattoo work on this half sleeve in far to long as well and don't want my artist to loose his vision/feel for the overall project as well so have to put some of my cash into it. Will be selling stuff to help support my addictions/hobbies lol.

Oh, doing some hard wheeling right before I left the tires did some extra clearance in the rear as well, so have to go back with the tin snips, clean that up/cut, and then seal it all with prime and paint etc. STill need to fab bump stops and start gathering metal for the rear bumper build. Think I'm going to go with the 4x4innovations carrier and latch setup as well, just more of a finished product than some of the other swingout and latch setups.

Productive day, first when picking up my older daughter took a back road with the recent raining it was actually fun! Then had to head home and wash it! Shortly after got it cleaned up got in a fight with the wife so said F it and threw the internal snorkel in:). It's all together now and drying so can't wait to hear it tomorrow and provide some feedback!

I didn't heat just bought a 22degree angle and used high temp glue, and then siliconed as well!

Sealed

Finished and clearance, this was prior to headlight install.

Damn photobucket:( Bad news may have to sell the 4Runner have another interview on Wednesday but a 30k a year jump in pay may have my commute go from around 25miles each way to over 50 each way, would need a gas sipper for that as still have to run my kids around so figuring 37-40k a year miles so looking at something with over 30 mpg. Time will tell and have another offer in Colorado Springs I'm considering which would mean the 4Runner would get fixed up even more but would have to leave my wife and kids here in Florida for the first four months and then decide if taking it full time and staying or coming back here and looking for a different job! The Colorado gig is 4 months back at Cheyenne mountain/Norad but doubles my pay! I'm a senior cyber security guy so don't make chump change already so have to consider it! In all honesty it's more than I made in Iraq as a DOS contractor and is stateside...

Well still haven't chose a different place to host photos but will and will update. The 315's are for sale, I got some Titan Steelies and took to machine shop and had opened up from 77.8 to our 106mm and then had to get some different lug nuts! IMO they look good but like crap due to the stock sized tires. I'll be taking the control arms and lift off to get better mpg as well and be selling it soon

Oh yeah, didn't take the Colorado job, took the massive promotion but triple the commute hence the changes on the 4Runner spending around 120-140 a week on gas for my commute. Actually considering one of the new dual motor hybrids like the accord or 2018 camry as they get over 50 on the hwy, would prefer a diesel or sporty car to tune and tweak but we will see how the deals fall in line when I'm ready to buy in about 30-45 days.

Even a V6 4Runner is too much for the gas bill? I get about 20mpg on the highway (the city is unspeakably low...)! Maybe with all that raise money you can justify the slightly higher gas cost...:wink2:

Lol, I get better mpg out if my v8 than I did my v6 4th gen! I get over 20mpg on stock tires and no lift from my v8. I got 18-19 with 285's, so went to 265's but will remove lift. I need something better commuting around 600 a week minimum. I'm looking at 35mpg hey as a minimum requirement.

Buy a cheap fuel sipper as your DD with the extra coin from your new job, but keep the 4Runner?

If I wasn't married would already be done. Wife is the smarter one with the money, so will get a nice new sipper now, and in around a year or so will get another 1st or 2nd gen to build more than likely.

Sooooo what happened to the 4Runner???

It's on 18" titan Steelies I had machined out to 106mm, and some tiny looking 265/70/18's that once rebalanced are now perfect:) I am waiting on a trade for my spacers 1.25" and getting some stock upper control arms for the trade and will then pull the spc upper arms and sell them. The 4Runner is currently at Toyota getting the throttle related recall done, and when they replaced my dash they blew a bulb out on my center console, and my vent keeps unclipping on passenger side so they have it till Saturday for that and I'm heading to Tampa in the morning for work till Saturday. Have a little Corolla rental and will check it out. I would consider the 2017/18 Corolla SE with the manual of the mpg is actually more than 35 as rated. I mean hell the new 8 speed auto on the Camry is rated at 39... Check out this ghetto alignment shop I got the tires balanced at... oh and going from the 315's to the 265's I went from 15.1 mpg average to 19.1 and with the front wheel bearing being bad when I replace it next week I wouldn't be suprised if it goes up, the wheel bearing IS that bad... Looks so weird on Steelies with smooth normal tires now.

Due to the hurricanes I put the 35's back on beginning of last month, and have been enjoying it. But it's time, As she sits with everything done including the passenger side front wheel bearing which I did a few weeks ago, on the 35's $10,500 no BS. For 10,500 I will include the 18" steelies as well in all honesty and I have my rear TJM springs for sale but if the buyer wants them will throw them in. Not 100% on the car I'm getting yet but don't except the 4Runner to sell overnight. No issues!!!!!!! I drive over 100 miles a day and never worry, the wheel bearings were bothering me so replaced the front right one, the drivers side tested fine but in all honesty it is making a little noise, no change so it could just be the aggressive tires:). The front passenger side one was bad though:).

Plugs, valve cover gaskets, intake tweaks, front diff, transfer case recent flush new cv's - will include the factory cv's for rebuild axles as I planned on using for trail spares. 315/70/17 BFG kO2's balanced Great on the stock rims with ALL-Pro 1.25 or 1.50 spacers don't remember right now. Tint was done in April, hell just look back through this thread and see most of what was done;)
