hey vegas, did you change your tires to bigger tires? I have 285s on right now and will be replacing soon, i'm actually thinking of going with smaller tires.

Pressure washer did a great job and took it all off super quick... Yeah the plan was to try out gunmetal (even though i fear it will really just look like the stock color when they're extra dirty with brake dust) but I can't find any stores in town locally that have it and since I have zero patients and want to get it done tomorrow on my day off, it looks like I'll have to go with black again... When I got more black today I was hoping to find some of the clear coat to make wiping the brake dust of easier but they didn't have any of that either:frusty:So a pressure washer was able to spray most of it right off? Didn't you want to originally try gunmetal? Now's the perfect opportunity
Yeah I hear you on going down in size... if you do a lot of miles and don't like the road noise or the handling at higher speeds or the decrease in gas mileage I get it.. But I don't mind any of that, I think the 285s look better on the 4unner and will be better for driving over zombies when the apocalypse happens.
I traded my 265s for 285's... I didn't like the huge gap in the wheel wells with the smaller tires ever since I got the lift... Although the rubbing with 285's with spacers is pretty crazy... I keep chopping a little more and more off the body mounts... Just really embarrassing when I pull into a tight spot in a shopping center or reversing out and it makes the loud rubbing noise.
It's time to put on my big boy pants and cut the rest of the body mount off... I need to stalk some other people pics on here to that have done the chop that also have the trail trim mudflaps cause I hope I can keep them on after the chop without them rubbing, cause they do look like that might be another rubbing spot...

finally got this done...
pretty happy with the end results... I could have spent a little more time prepping the paint and letting it dry between coats but it was windy outside.
So I planned on doing the plasti-dip after I was done with the body mounts today...but decided that since I think my truck looks so weird with the rims not black it might finally be time to take a more permanent route... powder coat time...

Powder coating rims today....
Soooooo....
Just dropped off my truck at the powder coat shop... Only place that said they could do it same day for a competitive price... Alot of the other shops that said 2-3 days the reviews online said more like 2-3 weeks... so it started to make more sense to buy some rims off Craigslist to swap out and make a few trips to a tire shop back and forth sounds like a lot of headache...for a min I almost thought about just painting them myself like SoCaI did...
I really don't like other people working on my truck... If you have read my build thread you know by now I am real crazy.... but I can just see my truck up on jack stands falling or they jack up the truck under a skid plate or they over tighten and snap a lugnut off... Or they "forget" to put back on my TMPS sensors when remounting the tires...
The place I took it had lots of fun signs on the walls like "it's only an estimate of the delivery time" and "if we took it apart we do not guarantee it will get put back together the same way" there was so many to read I couldn't take them all in... My favorite was a sign saying "push here for the complaint department" (the button was on a rap trap) it was a wall of signs pretty much covering every possible instance of someone complaining about the turnout of the work... It didn't exactly instill confidence in the shop.... "well I am sorry sir, didn't you read sign number 86 that clearly states we take zero responsibility for anything ever?"
Ok my rant is over Let's just see how it turns out?

Sooo I just picked up the truck from the powder coat shop... and there's probably a reason that most shops have a longer turn around time... cause they are busier or more likely they put more effort into the prep work... (someone here once said its all in the prep work)... so when I went this AM I asked if there was a good color match Spray paint to match the center cap to? they said they had a guy that would shoot it with a gun to do it professional.. I said sure why not might as well... So when I picked up the truck I was surprised the caps were installed the truck... I have been doing a lot of spray painting in my garage lately to try to make my non-craftsman garage components match my craftsman components and on most every spray paint it says to let it sit overnight to cure the paint...and I know this cause I had to do some sanding and redos when I man-handle some parts when rushing it... so figure the caps would be in a box not on the truck... anyways back to the rant.... the caps were not painted right which wasn't a big deal I told them all black but they kept the symbol chrome... nothing I couldn't fix myself... anyways when I got home to retouque my nuts I noticed a few chips were the caps had been locked into the wheel... so sneaky.... and also on the front wheel on the inner lip where the edge is was already chipping off there too....arrrgggghh...
so now I have to go back and debate with them that "I" didnt chip the wheel when removing the caps etc... I didn't know that Powder coat could chip so easy... So here my struggle... am I victim and live with it? I honestly don't know if I would even want to take my truck back there... Or should I go there and demand they fix it?
keep in mind you can't see the chips with the center cap in place... it just would have been nice to have the option to go without them... but its just a truck and its going to get scratches and chips, I would have liked to be the one doing them though... my other concern is if its already chipping does that mean it will continue to chip from that location?

I like what you did with the center cap emblem! Ties it all together real nice.
As far as the powder coating, while it's really not meant to be indestructible, it also shouldn't chip that easily...two things to consider: they might not have properly prepped the surface and did not achieve sufficient adhesion; and that spot that chipped off by the inner lip looks to be right at the sharp edge, which is a more prone area for chipping to begin with...
If it was me, I would probably just go back and bring it to their attention just to see how they will react. I mean I wouldn't lose sleep over it, but this way at the very least you made them aware of the issues right away and would be covering yourself in the event you start to see more visible areas chipping off later on.

Thanks! I bought the Satin black paint a while ago when i planned to do the badges...(before I got scared and decided to stick to forgiving plasti-dip)
I thought Satin would match the rims but it looks like the shops Satin black is closer to a flat black/semi gloss? Anyways I think I like the center like that... And as soon as I get a chance I'll do the lug nuts it the same.
And I think that's the way to go I'll find out real quick it they stand behind their work... that way if the chipping continues I'll know if I can bring it back there or if its time to just buy a set of mojave's

Yes that's me... There is also another black trail around the area but doesn't have the gobi rack.. Beside that its like staring in a really good looking 4runner mirror.

So I haven't been able to do too much to the truck lately since I have been redoing my garage...
It all started with needing a round file to fix a high edge on a coilover to complete my Icon lift... Having to run out to the store when I thought I had everything I needed... Then when it came time to bolt on the bracket for the reservoir and my little battery powered drill couldn't drill through the frame and I had to run out and get a stronger drill... So after that I decided to go from my little Crescent 52 piece tool set to a more equipped shop. So it took learning to weld to complete my new bench... A lot of cutting and remeasuring and starting over... The welding isn't too hard it's the triple checking measurements and compensating for some shrinkage etc. I probably took on way too much for a first welding project.. I should have started with a bird house...
Looking forward to the temperature dropping in the months ahead to make a rolling welding table to use my chop saw and grinding outside the garage...(learned my lesson the hard way of pitting stuff and leaving metal dust on everything) then I'll attempt to make an aux battery tray and new longer tool box for the Gobi...
