Vehicle speed sensor

Code 42 is showing up on my 95 4runner 3.0 liter. AT 340H
There are supposed to be two vehicle speed sensors.
Code 42 points to vehicle speed sensor # 1
The componet locator diagram shows both sensor on the transmission. The wiring diagram shows vehicle speed sensor # 1 in the combination meter. I can't find VSS #1 on the transmission.
Can anyone tell me if it really is in the combination meter and if it is is it part of the the combination meter or is it a separate item?
Code 42 says check for resistance between the VSS pin on the CPU and ground. My meter is showing 25 ohms which according to the manual suggests the CPU is bad not the sensor. I would like to find the sensor and test it directly before I consider a new CPU. Any thought on how to check if CPU is realy bad?

Yes there is a sensor in the speedometer. Usually that doesn't go bad. Is your speedometer working?

for what it's worth....

i have a 92 3.0 4WD with the AT 340 H tranny... i'm not getting any dash light codes,, but on very cold mornings,, the speedo works only intermittently for the first 3 or 4 miles... seems like it needs to warm up,,,,,

i didn't have a schematic,, but i could only eyeball just one thing that resembled a speed sensor,,on the passenger side of the tranny,, near the top of the case ,, near the front ... there was some plastic wiremold with two( i believe) wires coming out and attached to what appeard to be some type of sending unit,,, the unit is held on the tranny case with three small machine screws,,, upon it's removal,, there is what appears to be some sort of metal disc about 1/4 inch thick and about the size of a U.S. nickle. I'm not convinced this is the speed sensor,, but i could find NO other item that remotely looks like a speedo cable or sender.

i took the 4R by the local toyota dealer and let the parts manager have a look underneath. he was baffled too. he even looked it up on the microfiche with no luck :S

i had a 93 geo storm that did that... at least, if i understand you correctly. there was moisture in the speedo cable that was freezing. i decided it wasnt worth it to fix on that car, but i heard that some lube would help. i was told that some mechanic shops do it for pretty cheap.
of course, there's always the option of replacing the whole cable, too.

94 4runner wont shift into OD

I just got a 94 Toyota 4runner it shifts fine through all the gears when it's cold but after driving a short while once its warmed up it wont go into 3rd or O\D and the O/D ight flashes. Sometimes it just drops out of gears and wont go anywhere if your driving it over 50mph but once the rpms are lowered it will go in first and second. Codes pulled up 22'and 42 for temperature sensor and speedometer sensor. I put a speed sensor on it so my speedometer works now but it still wont shift into 3rd or O/D if its warmed up. Any idea what it could be???

So now the temp coolant temp sensor for the EFI ECM is probably add and needs replacing , or maybe you're low on coolant.

Will that prevent it from shifting into the right gear, mainly starts acting up if its been warmes up to what should be operatng temperature. Noticed the rpma fluctuating like it was confused of what gear it should be in and o/d light begins flashing. Check engine light is usually always on but when it begins to malfunction it goes off. And sometimes it just drops completely in rpm and wont go nowhere if I press the gas pedal in the middle of driving it, usually at higher speeds of 50mph + it just quits and then if I come to a stop then take off again its fine but Will do the same thing once trying to get up past 3rd.. Shifts fine through all gears when its first driven n cold...
