Verifying Dealer Comments

Hi all!

Looking to buy a 2016 4runner Limited 4x4. Been emailing dealers and one seems to zeroing on mt taeget price. However, the dealer emailed me a comment that seemed not to jive with what has been stated on the board. So, I'm looking for a T4R with automatic running boards (code KG, correct me if I'm wrong).

He said the automatic running boards can be installed at the dealer. Seems a bit odd from what info I've gathered. BTW in TX

Completely false? Just a tactic to get me to come in? Or maybe they can... but they plan to charge me a lot?

I would say go in and check it out. If they say they are going to charge you extra all you have to do is walk out the door.
 
Didn't amp research make power steps for the 4Runner? Maybe that is what they want to add, I thought the power boards came from the factory otherwise, but I'm not sure.

Hi utslickvic,

The typical reason for the dealer installing the running boards at their facility is that they have some limited edition models on their lot but they are not equipt with automatic running boards, so they're offering to install them rather than ordering another limited special order. What I would do (if it were me) is, go there and take a look at what they have.

Then agree to buy the limited from them 'ONLY' if they're willing to include the running boards at no extra cost; plenty of other dealerships that'll be happy to through them in for you! You have to act as if you're only casually interested in what they're offering; I've done it twice (both 4Runners) and it works! ...I actually enjoy that more than the money I'm saving! "It's a buyer's market now so use it!"

Gulf States Toyota GST is a strange animal to most people in the USA. I worked at a GST dealership for awhile. In a nutshell, GST is the only distribution area not part of Toyota Motor Sales. Blah blah blah. Go to the dealer and ask to see the the product they are selling you. If you like them, buy it. If not, demand OEM Toyota product. GST tends to supply non OEM stuff, even though they say it's factory. It's not. Trust me.

I was going to point out that none of the respondents were within the Gulf States region. Each region operates independently. I would assume (I know, an Ass out of U and Me) that the best case would be port installed.

Thanks all for the insite. I suspected the Gulf state thing might weighin... which is why I mentioned it. I would be buying in the DFW area. But willing to drive awhile within TX or even OK to get a good deal. BTW is OK considered a gulf state?

So what does it mean that GST distrubution is not part of Toyota Motors co. ? What does that amount to?.... dealers not being able to order toyota parts for dealer installs?
 
No, GST is an official Toyota distributor but they do things their own way. For instance, you'll never see TSS, Toyota Sports Series, tacomas or tundras in other regions. Those are all GST port installed mark up BS crap. IMO
 
I've read a few posts on here re auto RBs. All, IIRC, have had problems sooner or later, regardless of who manufactured them.

As they have a troublesome reputation, if you must buy, I would absolutely not buy anything but Toyota factory OEM simply due to warranty concerns.

They're a clever idea, and my short wife needs RBs, but I don't think I'd want the automatic variety. They are more complex than you might imagine.

ETA: Remember, most dealers are going to tell you anything to get you in the door .... anything. Caveat Emptor.

I lifted my TRD-PRO , 3" lift, i never use the running boards, i find them to narrow,too close to the body, my foot doesnt fit, seems to get trapped. Size 10.5 shoe- 6-2 height

OK is in the GST distribution region. I try to a oid them like the plague. The window stickers are shocking, and on 2wd's none the less.

If he gets the amp research ones put on they won't have either issue. I have them on my truck and they are great, Wear a size 12 shoe and have plenty of room, they drop down and have great width, then tuck up nice and neat under the doors so you get your clearance back.
 
I looked into the Amp Research ones, and they were NOT available for LE. Sounds like this is what the OP is shopping for.
