I saw the post of 5-6 seconds of cranking time by someone with a '07 V6. I have a V8 with 99K miles. For no cause I can determine, there are times I turn the key, let go and it tries to crank for ~3-5 seconds then stops. Try again, same thing. Try again, it stumbles a little at the end before stopping the crank attempt. Fourth (maybe 5th?), it cranks and all is good. After it starts there is never a hesitation or anything. This happens at times when hot and cold and I run mid or high octane depending on how poor I feel, but there isn't a trend there either. I have also noticed other times where the first time cranking takes 1-2 longer than "normal", but then starts.
So on the other thread everyone said replace the battery and the end resolution was said to be the fuel pump. I'm good with going that route, but here's what I don't understand. This all started WHEN I replaced the 5 yr old battery because of the damn VSC light issues (replaced gas cap, battery and now working on zero point reset - that's another story). I bought the recommended Interstate Heavy Duty battery for V8 4runners. The first time I tried starting it, it suprised me how fast the starter was spinning. It was always fast, but it now has a VERY fast sound to it.
So I guess my pre-replace fuel pump question is, could the heavy duty battery's cranking amps actually be spinning the engine to quick for the fuel going in and that causes issues at times? I considering riding out the problem because we may sell in the near future, but it is annoying and a little embarrassing when it acts up.
