(very) high-mile oil changes, 4.0 V6

Omg none of my fluidz are OEM? Is my truck gonna explode gaiz?

use the proper fluids as your vehicle manufacturer states. look up the spec # on the proper fluid to use.

I am not telling members to use fluids, NOT of the manufacturer spec #,,,.
SOME on the FORUMS will cause vehicles to fail and cost a load of $$$ .because they stated it is a much cheaper fluid .

be careful do the work and be anal on how to properly keep it running.
one vehicle I owned from day one was a 1983 sedan . ran it 380,000 miles 17 yrs then I sold it for $1700. no major work just brakes/tires/one water pump..that was it !

200K is not even close to very high for a 4.0 Report back when you hit 500K Anyway, my personal preference in Toyota synthetic oil and filter and I change it every 5K miles. Since you do so much highway, 8K will likely be fine. I wouldn't push more than that though.
Mobil makes the oil for Toyota I believe so unless Mobil puts in radically different additives for Toyota which they probably do not, you could go with Mobil 1 Synthetic. Just change your oil regularly and use a quality oil filter. I have to believe Mobil 1 would be cheaper than Toyota branded oil. Costco has it for $28 a case right now and Walmart sells it for 25.47 a 5 Qt Jug. If you go to an Oil Change place Mobil 1 will probably be expensive.

Yes Mobil does make Toyota oil and yes they do put an insane additive package in it unlike any other oil on the market. The package in Toyota oil is literally 10+ times what you get from the off the shelf version. The Moly content is through the roof which is why the engines run so much quieter when using Toyota oil.

you have to use the correct fluids in your model year vehicle.. he commented on saying use fluids on the cheap ..

I do not dump my vehicles in 4 years then buy new. I keep my vehicles probably longer than his age LOL....

just throw anything in your ride on the cheap then buy a new ride next year..

you make a lot of incorrect assumptions... including my age based on an accurate comment i posted.

i never said to use the WRONG fluids on the cheap. if its rated by the manufacturer for use in that vehicle then its ok to use, such as valvoline maxlife trans fluid instead of toyota WS. i simply suggested a brand of coolant & mentioned it was cheaper than overpriced toyota stuff at a dealership.

The one item in this discussion I do agree using the Toyota brand for is the filter, it's surprisingly less expensive than any other filter and is of higher quality from all the test results I have seen than most if not all the others out there.

What's the model number? I have seen some discussion of a tall filter and a short filter. Any thoughts on using one vs. the other?

I SWITCHED TO TOYOTA engine oil SN PLUS from mobil 1. toyota oil works better engine is quiet .. also a increase in MPG.
I do oil changes 7K miles of use but I do not use the runner on hywy use too much .. also I only run it 7K miles a year. 2016 model SR5.
I do the oil changes and I give it 45min for oil to drain.. no debris in the oil filter.. very hard to read the stick of oil level ,very clear oil .no oil drop on the 7K oil changes.

zomg! our 4TH GEN 4Runners aren't spec'd for the new 0w-20 weight moly magic oil! Be careful gaiz! :tape2:

The OEM filter is fine...I use the higher capacity (slightly longer), longer drain interval Fram XG3600. Upside too is that the Fram Ultra is 99% efficient at 20-microns - whereas I believe the OEM one is 50% efficient at 20-microns. Someone over on BITOG even cut apart a Fram Ultra and a TRD (made by Champion) filter to compare.

i have only used the short filter, the part number is 90915-YZZD3 , it fits both the V8 and the V6.

That's actually the long filter, unless there is a longer one than that. The spec'd one for my 3.4L Tacoma uses the shorter version of the YZZD3. I just use the YZZD3 on both motors to keep it simple.

I think you maybe correct, but I though I read about a bigger one here on the forums but I might have not remebered which was the bigger filter, if I run across one that is indeed bigger than the YZZD3 I will post it, the YZZD3 is the filter that is specified for the 4th gen V8 and V6 plus many other Toyota engines, there's a shorter filter the YZZD1 that is used on the Tacoma, but many Tacoma owners use the YZZD3 because it's bigger.

I just spent the last hour or so reading a topic on Tacoma World where Chris 4X4 cut open a bunch of filters to compare them to the OEM filter, still haven't made it through the whole topic yet.

YZZD3 is the long filter. YZZD1 I think is spec'd for both the 4.0 and the 3.4 5VZ, and the YZZD3 is for the 1UZ (and 2UZ?).

I used the YZZD3 on the 3.4 and the 4.0 without any issue whatsoever. Great filter.

I got a bunch of Wix 50516XP from RockAuto last order though and they're also super ****ing good and have more filter material. Fit well on the 4.0 since there's no limit to how long you can go.

I appreciate everyone’s replies. I bought a case of the Toyota YGGZ3 (tall) filters, Penzoil Ultra Platinum full-synthetic, Zerex coolant flush, and Zerex Asian coolant.

I’ll stick to the 8,000 mile (two month) oil and filter changes for now, and I will opt for an oil analysis in the near future after a couple more changes. I’ll throw this analysis on my schedule for around 220,000-225,000 miles this summer.

Thanks for the help, everyone. Seriously. I really need to squeeze at least another 100k out of this old truck and I’m happy to hear that everyone thinks it’s likely— with good maintenance. I just paid the local Toyota dealership to do transmission, break fluid, and rear end drain-and-fills, but I can handle most of the other stuff like oil, coolant, and brake pads. Hopefully that’s all she needs!

I hope the part number for the filter you posted is a typo, if not I have never heard of that number/filter.

mobil 1 synthetic high mileage for my last change, i am going to use the amazon synthetic next time around i think $$

I just spent hours reviewing filtration studies and build qualities online. I searched the entire T4R site and only your two posts suggesting using this filter are on here. I am currently swapping out the xg3614 for a xg3600 for its extra capacity. Its exactly the same specs as the xg3614 just longer thus more filtration media. I am dead certain this is the ultimate filter for our engines and I plan to swap every 5k as I am with the XG3614 as its currently on a .50 difference in price. Kudos.

To the lurkers, I would never put any other FRAM filter on my engine except the Ultra which seems to surpass everything on the market by good measure.

Indeed, I tend to probably over-research just about everything and it’s the best I could find! Glad I could help ya!

Some filter manufacturers like to tout filtration efficiency rates but what about flow rates? I can put very high efficiency filters in my furnace too but it restricts the flow and makes the system work much harder. That is a bad trade off and reduces the life of the system. Same goes for oil filters. Does anyone list flow rates?

That was a thought of mine as well. The more I started researching the more I discovered its a total non issue except perhaps in some high performance race engines in which the filter was rarely the problem but the engine oil channels were. One of the unique things about the Fram ultra is it's a dual layer synthetic material. Dual filtration layers to allow a consistent high flow and filtration rate over extended periods and a finer inner layer for the 99% filtration at 20 microns. Another consensus seems to be the the synthetic filter material flows at a much higher rate the the synthetic blend or the standard cellulose found in filters. So, I think your thought process and concern of flow rate is well placed, but it doesn't seem to be an issue anymore with modern filters that we'd use on our vehicles.
