Very very technical, difficult issue: removing the rear cargo cigarette lighter

I can't believe the trouble I'm having with this stupid thing. I just to remove the cylinder piece from the plastic bezel in order to replace the broken cap, but I cannot get it out. It looks like it should just push out but it doesn't.

Those are a pain, because you have to get in there to release the clips. Here's how I did it (maybe there's an easier way).

Start with removing the nut on the back and taking out all the internals:

Now you can see where the plastic clips engage the cutouts in the metal body:

I wedged a thin flathead screwdriver to push the clips out:

Then you should be able to slide the metal sleeve out of the plastic housing:

Well, I'm glad I'm not the only one that struggled with this. What a huge pain in the ass. Thanks for the detailed response and for the photos. How did you get the piece out of the bezel though? It has those tabs and looks like it should just twist out but it doesn't go

It's the same idea as for the black power outlet bezel in my photo - you have to remove the metal cylinder from inside the plastic cylinder as I showed, then you'll be able to squeeze the tabs on the plastic cylinder and take it out of the plastic bezel. But you can't squeeze the tabs until you remove the metal (silver) cylinder.
