Vibration/grinding when coming to a stop

Hi,

I got an 02' 4Runner about 6 weeks ago. Took it to a local shop when purchasing, they found a few things that needed fixing (brakes, tires/alignment, tuneup, shocks). After bringing it to my regular mechanic, he did all of the above except tires/alignment, as I was going to take care of that separately. He installed new front brakes and rotors.

Over the last week or two, I occasionally get a grinding/vibrating thing going on when coming to a stop - only in the last 5mph or so as i approach a full stop. It doesn't matter how fast I was going to begin with. A passenger felt this a few times, it gives the sensation of something grinding and there's a vibration.

When I let off the brakes, the feeling goes away. It is not consistent, it only happens once in a while, and when it happens it tends to happen a few times in a row.

Does this sound familiar to anyone?

i remember my new brake pads did similar things until they wore in. correct me if im wrong fellow pal's but new rotors should be turned just to true up the surface also. so maybe give it a tank of gas and see. sorry this probably made no sense. i did my best.

once you put new pad/rotors on you should not be getting grinding or vibration, i had this happen once before in the past and what was found that if brake quiet was applied to the pads it sometimes will get on the braking surface of the pad and will cause the symptoms that you have,unfortunatey you will need to have the pads removed and lightly sand them to remove the residue, also you did not say what type of pad was used,I have 98 t4r and just 2 weeks ago I replaced the pads with ceramic pads and new rotors and have no vibration or grinding, but I also found that I had other grinding/vibe issues and it was in the rear brakes, I then reolaced shoes,springs and drums,no more issues.
also usually new rotor,drums do not need to be cut,just a good cleanup with brake clean and a little sandpaper will usually do the trick

Did you ever figure out what was causing this vibration / grinding? I have a similar issue going on with my '97 Runner, and I would like to identify the problem. I have only owned the truck for a few months, and driven about 3k, but I don't know exactly when PO replaced the brakes, but I think I remember him saying it was somewhat recent. Also, the rotors are warped on the truck, but doesn't really feel like a brake issue......but is exactly as you described here.

I've been told that if you feel the vibration in the steering wheel it's coming from the front, and if you feel the vibration in the seat it's coming from the rear. Not having an alignment will cause some vibrations when braking, especially at lower speeds.

Also have severe vibration when applying breaks

I have SEVERE vibration when I apply my breaks (although I do not experience the grinding,) Mine is caused by heat cracks in the Left front rotor. You might check them out. Now my 4Runner has this squeaking noise when I apply the gas & the break pads NEED changing because I get the squeak sound of worn out pads when applying the break. I hope that helps you!

What type of vibration? I think you're experiencing ABS activation, especially at that speed. You hearing a grind TYPE noise and feel the pedal vibrating rapidly? I would bet you have a faulty wheel speed sensor.
