vibration / humming noise at low speed only - IDEAS??

Will you let us know how much it costs when you get it fixed? I have the same thing from 65-75 mph. Not sure if it's worth fixing because it goes away at 80 and doesn't really bother me.

I just got it back from the shop, I would tell you how much it cost ,but my girlfriend's dad owns the shop. I walked out not paying for it, I was expecting to just pay for parts and half labor. Just gotta help him with some other of his businesses.

By my numbers everything was:

$170 for the moog hub bearing
Plus 3-4 hours labor @at least $60 an hour, plus they had to refill some gear oil from pulling the shaft and replacing the seal on the diff.

I'm gonna lift it today and start w some basics - since diff fluid wasn't the prob. I'll prob check rotation - then may as well rotate the tires and check again.

Let me know what you find out. Changing the hub bearing on mine helped with the noise and the smoothness of my ride. But I still have a very intermittent shimmy of the steering wheel.

Does the noise get louder as you speed up and seem to disappear when the wheel is slightly turned in one direction?

It gets louder as I speed up or slow down, but it's really only between certain speed ranges. I haven't noticed any shaking, or any change with the wheel being turned. I need to get it in to the shop. Hopefully it's something like the wheel bearing.

My growl is as follows:

1. Under 30: no real sound.
2. Starting around 30, it begins...
3. 46-49 is the worst zone, Sometimes feel worse when decelerating.
4. Over 55-60 is mostly gone.
5. Is about the same in any gear or in neutral
6. Doe not act like a wheel bearing, but its still on my list.
7. I feel it in the front floor and also steering wheel.
8. Same when either in 2Hi or 4Hi.
9. Surveying of passengers is that its a front noise, not rear.

At first I thought it was worse when going downhill in gear, but I think it really does it at all times now.

Not really sure what it is, still waiting for something to go bang !

Figured I'd update this for anyone else with the issue:

Mine turned out to be a wheel bearing going bad. Not sure why (increased wear from the Spidertrax?) but it's a delightful little $650 fix.

Mine was a front bearing. Just got it back today, and it's better, but there's still some kind of humming noise. Comes on at 30 mph and stops at 35. Audible on deceleration, too. So annoying. I'm going to take it back in this week, and will update if I have any news.

Mines in the shop now, both front wheel bearings need replacing, getting done now.

Will report back tonight on what that solved.....and any remaining noise/vibration issue.

Replacing both front bearings solved the 40-50 speed range sound/vibration, I don't feel anything in the floorboards, pedals or steering wheel anymore. Sweet !

However, still have a signficant sound/vibration in the 55-60 range, sounds more like the rear. Its a constant noise.

So, will drive it for a while and see if we can narrow it down.

I have duratracs and the dealer tells me its the tires even after I rotated them with no change to the problem. any advice? thinking of just going back and telling them to check all the bearings and the front diff??

That's odd it stops after you are in 4WD. That may indicate a bad seal or gear since once you're in 4wd power is split up and not 100% is at the rear. Keep us posted.

Update: my remaining noise/vibration was a right rear wheel bearing. It had greater noise turning left at 58-60 and no noise turning right.

All quiet now !!!!!

Wow, 3/4 wheel bearings bad. How many miles do you have?

My '07 has 143k on it, so seems OK for wheel bearing failure, based on other vehicles I've owned.

Interesting comment from the service guy that they think the solutions put on the road in winter may be contributing factor. Other states who do not use these de-icing solutions are not seeing equal failure rates.

Who knows, could be a factor I suppose.

I had also googled wheel bearing failures in general, and we're certainly not alone as Toyota owners...

HAd my truckk at the dealership, the tech took a test drive with me confirmed the noise/vibration. He spent an hour or 2 under it and couldn't find the source. They said they had another 4 runner and everything looked the same, Said it wasnt the bearing. He said my diff fluid was low, so i told them drain it and fill it. it was a 1/4 quart low. they thought it would fix the problem it didnt. Im taking it back friday and telling them to do the tsb driveshaft(if they'll do it under warranty) and find & fix the problem. Any recommendations? advice, places to point them??

It is clearly a vibration/noise hum/ rotational? that is there in 2wd from 30-45 and goes away immedietaly upon putting it in 4wd

When I was researching mine, I came across a TSB for Tundra front diffs that had noise in the lower speed ranges and went away if put into 4H. There was a description and also a decision tree to diagnose.

I'll try to find it.

thanks for the link, through that link through another, Im starting to believe it may be the ADD actuator is going bad, or isnt fully retracting and some splines are touching.. Im going to see if I can convince the to put an new one in and see if it fixes and have toyota cover it, or just pay for it out of pocket.. and fml lol.
ITs so annoying im considering just selling and getting in something else
