VIN and ECU matcher

Searching for a tool that will help to tell me which ECU I need to replace a 95 4Runner Limited, Auto, and 4x4. Don't want to spend money and time with trial and error. I've searched and come up with sites that don't exist anymore. I have the VIN and I also will try to call my local dealership to see if they can help me out as well, figured I'd try here first. Thanks for the help in advance!

I've never heard of nitty-gritty details like that being in the VIN, for one there's not enough room.
Why not just look at yours and get the p/n off of it?

It's for a 4Runner that I might purchase from a friend and he's not sure where the original ecu is. That's why I was looking for a matcher. I have found some that will show the ecu by looking up 4Runner parts catalog

The issue is that he does not know what Part Number he needs for his vehicle set-up. That information is not really stored in the VIN so much as the VIN is used to narrow down build data on a parts catalog. I don't know if that part of the parts catalog is easily obtained outside of a Toyota system though.

Toyota did not start writing VINs into their ECUs until about '05~'06-ish if I remember right.

Right, the ECMs weren't sophisticated enough to do that until then.
