Can anybody explain to me the reason for VIN's etched on windows? I've done some research and learned it was an option when new but am just curious what purpose it would have served... Thanks

It's pretty standard now a days, my 03 honda had it. I think it is for theft recovery, if stripped. Also if buying a later model used car you are bale to see if the windows have been replaced. Glass quality seems to vary by vendor replacement.

ok thanks I was looking on Google for 4runners in particular about the etching and not all cars in general. I didn't realize it was an option with all vehicles. Thanks again.....

Theft deterrent. Especially in Africa where used, or "stolen" parts are worth more. The glass is worth alot apparently and the thiefs of cars can't sell the glass if it is etched with a vin because no one will buy it. Also theVIN etching may increase the odds of the police recovering the stolen vehicle. It's not as common in the US.

Was done for additional dealer profit. They claimed it reduced theft because the VIN number would be readily available to the police, etc. They used to charge approximately $100. If they still sell the kit you could get it at many auto parts stores, prepare the stencil, stick to the window and apply the acid that came with the kit. Wait a few minutes, remove stencil, and your window was etched.

Yeah Sherwood small world... If you know of any 4runner clubs in my area let me know. Around here 4runners bring a premium price but there aren't any groups of 4runner owners that I know of... Take care...
