Hey all,

I am new to the yota family but by no means new to vehicles. I have a 96 with the pesky RS3000 and have downloaded the user guide and read it thoroughly. I have combed the forum and found nothing. The only thing I can assume is a bad ECU.

I go to reset the unit by holding the button for 3 seconds, releasing and holding for 2 sec. and i get nothing. No lights or sounds. However when I go to program my new remote, once i hit the top button i get lights but no chirp as if it has recognized and accepted the new remote. Turn the key off and the remote does nothing. Whats annoying is I know its recognizing the remote because i get the double flash. I cant figure out why it wont let me erase the ECU. Perhaps its retaining 4 other remote codes?

Any thoughts?

Brian, Thanks for the reply. The Toyota installed alarms on 3rd gens are called VIP RS3000 alarms--these use a toyota fob (black or gray depending on year and FCC frequency) and were typically installed under the drivers seat at either the port or by the dealers. They are not affiliated with Viper.

I am hoping that I can find a wiring diagram and discover if the issue is with the alarm ECU, or simply that someone cut the power to the alarm. Right now The LED indicator light is not blinking, and I am trying to ascertain which wires (30-40 of them running to the ECU) carry the 12V to the alarm.

I guess I the lucky son of a gun. My '96 Limited didn't come with the factory alarm, it came with the piece of shit Karr Alarm/Keyless entry combo.

Sellers of key FOBs online sometime sell out so here is a recent option for an aftermarket key FOB that works for my 1997 VIP RS3000 system. Plus it ships prime from amazon for cheap. Quality isn't too bad.

Was hoping someone can help me out. I can't post a new thread cause I'm new. I was trying to program a new key fob with my RS3000 alarm by pressing the green button on the side. When I did the button went completely inside the box and now my alarm is going crazy. Randomly honking and frantically cycling door locks. I can't even drive the car in this state.

I can't seem to find a way to just completely disable the RS3000, as most older posts just mention to not have it honk, but it still cycles the locks like crazy.

I've also ordered a replacement from ebay. Is it just plug and play? Hoping someone can help me so I can drive my car again

Find the module under your driver seat(might have to take off driver side door "sill cover" and reach under carpet) and basically just unplug everything connected to it. You will have to manually lock/unlock your doors and all that but the car should start. This trick worked for me. Try it out and let us know if your able to start the car now

Thank you for the help! So it did not turn on (wheel locked) once I unplugged it.

However, after unplugging and re-plugging it, it seemed to "fix" it. The alarm is no longer spazzing out and cycling my door locks anymore. I do have one from ebay coming in the next week or so.

This alarm is such a PITA. All of this just because I am trying to program a key fob.

Rs3000 vs ECU

I am confused about the device that confirms the correct key. I have a 1999 SR5. It cranks but wont start. After chasing every possibilityI determined the ECU was bad. I have a new one and can read failure codes now. It came with a matching key. It is giving me a b2796 code. The security system is actually a RS2000. This model is not discussed much. I think it must be an early version of the RS3000. The security light is not on or blinking. I think the RS2000 has failed. I can see that the key transponder coil is wired directly to it with no amplifier None of this is documented in the Repair manual. My question is whether the key is verified in the RS2000 or in the ECU or both? I am guessing that the key signal is not getting through te RS2000 to the ECU. I have a replacement RS3000 in order.

Is there a way to simply disable the RS3000 all together? I have the same problem with no key fab and no way to cut off the alarm without starting the truck.
