"Voltage Booster" for 31M AGM Battery

First. Thanks for all who purchased these! It's awesome to have a community to support small niche mods that would've otherwise be impossible to manufacture without guys/gals like you.

Right now I'm sold out on the VB and can't say for sure when and if they'll be back. I make these in batches of 100 so there's quite a bit of coordination and investment involved whenever I do and right now I'm pretty confident I'll be stuck with quite a few VB if I do another run (supply vs demand). If anything changes I'll be sure post here with updates.
count me in for the next batch

Count me in for 1 too when you get them back in. Thanks

I'm in......was waiting to order lift gate & dome lights at the same time :(

Sorry I should have clarified, I'm talking about the cheap GM diode with no fuse. The kit fron sno has a built in fuse which is nice.

GM engineers found it to be perfectly acceptable for their vehicles so nothing wrong with it. There is almost no current on that fuse, its just a sensing circuit to detect if there is voltage there or not. your power system is not running thru that fuse. And it is still a fuse it doesn't eliminate any safety factor.

It works exactly like GM intended it to. It's all proven technology for the last 20 or 30 years

Count me in for 2 as well.

I have both the HKB and GM diode. I tested both, and they both work as advertised.

If you want a cheap OEM diode get the GM diode. If you want a badass one, get LOLSNOWS. I don't see a reason to purchase the HKB one anymore. I own one, because it was the only option when I purchased it (or I knew about at the time).

The GM diode's wings can be easily trimmed from a small file, dremel, or a nail clipper (just make sure it clips in straight edges).

I endorse this post :)

I have all three too. I bought the HKB over four years ago, before anyone had or known about anything else, yeah it works OK, not great. I see no reason to purchase an HKB either (unless of course it is your only option) I looked at LOLSNOW v1.0, all sold out so I bought a GM to test (yes it works OK too) and to have as a backup.

after reading this thread about 6 weeks ago, I went to O'Reilys and ordered 2 "cheap" GM diodes, I got them the next morning and I've been running it over 5 weeks now, I see a consistent voltage of 14.4-14.6 when driving on my new Odyssey 34R-1500T and it is reading in the mid/high 12's every morning I've checked it before driving and It's loving me for it!! I check the battery by terminals to get the morning numbers. best $16 mod I've made.

My readings are same as yours every morning with the same battery with the stock fuse. Battery is 2 years old. In a previous thread I called Odyssey about voltage issue and they said not to worry about it or overthink the voltage. They said they are not aware of any problems with their batteries on 4runners. I asked them how to increase the voltage if I wanted to.I did not mention the forum way to increase the voltage. They did not know of anyway to increase the voltage. They said just drive it and not worry about it. It would not affect the warranty at all.

Interesting setup here.

My guess this is just altering the sensing voltage going into the voltage regulator. It thinks its at say 12.5 volts but its really at 13volts so it ups the excitation to get you to 13.5V

Good idea.

read your Odyssey warranty, it has this statement:
Alternators that do not have a regulated charge between 14.0V and 14.7V (no lower than 14.0V and no higher than 14.7V) will cause early failure of the Battery. Use of such alternators with the Battery will also void the Battery’s warranty.

are you just checking the voltage at startup or are you actually monitoring the voltage while driving, and how are you checking the voltage? If you actually have a stock sustained 14.4V-14.6V that's the first I've ever seen and it's not typical.

Does anyone have pics of what exactly needs trimmed down?

Odyssey is not going to go to your house and check your voltage if you have a warranty claim. I have no way to check the voltage while driving. My voltage is 12.6 - 12.7 after setting overnight. I am in a warm climate and the results may be different in colder climates.

the dealer you return the battery to can easily walk outside and check voltage, so be sure to pay to mail it to return for warranty service

its hard to show. Basically you trim the sides so it fits into the fuse slot. It literally less than 1mm, and since the fuse is incased in hard plastic, once you trim it, you can't even tell. I used nail clippers, that's how tiny the amount is.

It's like a little nub that prevents it from sliding into the fuse slot. Probably designed to ensure that it is inserted correctly on the vehicle it was designed for. If you have one and try to install it you will instantly see what to trim off, should take about 3 seconds to trim and reinstall. I used a dremel tool but that was over kill.

Hi all,

I stumbled onto to this forum and would like to first of all thank all have purchased our booster unit. To the one who had an issue with our unit our apologies, our units are guaranteed for life and we would have happily replaced it if you had contacted us.

We spend a lot of time researching our products and testing them including many tens of thousands of kilometers in vehicle to ensure they will work as intended. It is easy to copy someone else's idea but without a full understanding of what you are doing it can become a dangerous exercise.

The suggestion that a higher rated diode than 1A needs to be used for this application shows the writer has no real understanding of vehicles charging system.

Now for the serious part, the design of the circuit board above could result in a electrical fire, I would suggest the designer make suitable changes to avoid this. If they can't work out why then they shouldn't be making the unit.

The use of the cheap diode suggested with or without a fuse could also lead to an electrical fire.

Cheers
Leigh
