New 4runner owner ('03 SR5 V8 4WD) with a question:
Does installing larger tires, a lift or other more extreme mods (like the Total Chaos long travel front end that goodtimes has) cause the VSC or ATRAC systems to freak out? I know Thai pointed out that his mercedes G-wagon has such issues with big tires, but I haven't heard of any specific problems with 4runners.
I just want to lift it an inch at the suspension and put 32" tires on (vs. stock 30.5") to give it clearance closer to a gen 3 runner.
As I understand it, VSC uses the wheel speed sensors to infer a yaw rate and compares that to the rate it measures with a gyroscope. If they don't match, it thinks the vehicle is in a skid, but with larger tires, the rate that it gets from the speed sensors will be off by a constant factor due to the larger tires. So in a tight enough curve, it will activate and try to take over the steering with the brakes. The driver can fight it, but that may put strain on the drivetrain or even cause a skid.
Any thoughts? 30.5 to 32 is only a 5% change, so hopefully it's OK at that level.
