The '04 didn't have a factory "VSC off". If you hit a switch & the "VSC off" light is on, you locked the center differential (which also turns off the VSC). That is knid of a traditional 4 wheel drive state where you only want to use it on low friction (snow, sand, dirt, etc) surfaces. With it locked, it can cause binding when turning which sounds like what's happening to you.

CHAZ is talking about a modification that many have done allowing you to turn off the VSC only. The newer 4runners had that ability from the factory.

JB...oh geez...what does that mean?

I just got this damn thing! lol nervous

Get the wheels straight and hit the button that made VSC turn off. When the light on the dash that has the 4 wheels and an x in the middle goes off, you're good to go.

From the '04 manual:
Use the center differential lock system if
your wheels get stuck in a ditch, or when
you are driving on a slippery or bumpy
surface. When the center differential is
locked, the vehicle stability control system
is automatically turned off and the center
differential lock and “VSC OFF” indicator
lights come on because the function that
controls engine performance interferes
with the process of freeing your wheels.
