Wait for 6th gen 4runner?

As far as I know, Toyota seems more interested in pursuing smaller displacement engines as well as dipping into forced induction in the near future (as evidenced by the Tacoma's new 3.5L DS4 V6 and the new Lexus NX's turbo-charged 4-banger.) So most likely the 6th Gen will have the new 3.5L D4S equipped V6, I wouldn't be surprised if they tried to sneak in the I4 again this time around.

Most likely the 6th Gen will be underpinned by the 3rd Gen Tacoma frame (which I have a feeling is a slightly modified J150 platform, which in turn was a supposedly updated J120 [I think the body was updated more than the actual frame at this point,] but we will see when the 2016 Tacomas start rolling out.

The 6th Gen 4Runner will most likely retain the boxy look, but incorporate the Tacoma's front end styling to a small degree as that seems an unfortunately logical choice for setting it apart from the Highlander.

It may have some more glitzy crap in it, I don't understand you people and your desire for a motorized rear door. It's like buying a sunroof, all you're doing is investing in an expensive future repair; they WILL fail and they WILL be ridiculously expensive to fix. I think most people get a bit too obsessed with tacking on a bunch of useless crap that they later complain about how expensive to repair later down the road.

Oh, also apparently there's some sort of industry expectation being pushed by the insurance companies that by 2017 all vehicles will be "unable to crash," so if you think VSC, ABS, and TRAC are frustrating now... imagine when the vehicle in front of you takes control from the driver because is slides out and then your vehicle does the same to prevent you from crashing into them (because VSC, TRAC, and ABS always work 100% perfectly and not over-correct for you and cause more problems...) So yeah, that's something to look forward to.

Once you live with a pr tailgate you are hooked. They are sweet. If gen6 has one Im in. Love the pr tailgate in my pos ml350. And by the way it's one of the only things that hasn't broken yet.

Meh, my dad's RX350 has it. Pretty usefull (for him, he is short and 71 years old). I can also see it being useful to my 5'0" wife. She can barely close our 4th gen liftgate. Yes, these "niceties" (nice titties) WILL break and will require an expensive fix. Will ppl cry about it? Of course they will. 6th Gen? Well, this is about the 15th thread about it and the general feeling is that its going to happen. That's great. I can't wait (WHATEVER it is, whether it is Tacoma based, have a V6, I4 Turbo, bigger, smaller, etc etc. Let's face it, most of us will love it WHATEVER it is.)

Not to sound like d*ck, but what's NEUTERED about it? A Prado is a formidable platform. HELL, I still hold out hope that the next 6th is based on the Prado, but that is wishful thinking.

I still say Toyota bring over the Prado and simply rebadged it a 4Runner. Again, that might (99% sure) not happened.

hell the GXxxx has everything, all the features of the TE and the LE in one package with a v8 to boot.

downside of the gx is that the v8 avg mpg is around 12-13, maybe 17-18 highway, no rear window roll down and that barn door rear door.

people b.itch now with the 16-17 mpg now in the 4runner.

if the nearest lexus dealer wasn't 550 miles away I would be in gx460 right now instead of a 4runner.

yeah, i thought it was common knowledge that the 4Runner is the U.S. domestic market version of what's known to the ROW as the Land Cruiser Prado. :shrug:

Tough as nails, reliable (where it actually matters... no 24hr dealers/service centers, let alone replacement parts), and extremely capable (where paved roads are a luxury not an expectation).

I would be happy to even have a quarter of the options the prado has on the 4runner, aftermarket wise.

I'd put my GX up against any other offroad truck out there. If you think that either of those trucks is the watered down version of the 4runner you are completely wrong.


In fact, I'd argue that the 4runner is the watered down american version of the prado/GX. So maybe you should try on your panties before attempting to hand them to a GX or Prado owner?

Agreed. The GX and Prado are just as capable off road as the 4Runner, essentially the same underpinnings, except the GX/Prado have much nicer interiors and the GX comes with the V8. If I could afford the GX I would have bought one. I'm willing to bet that 99.9% of the people who bash the GX/Prado would buy one if it was the same price as the 4Runner. If they tell you otherwise they're probably lying.

I want manual everything: Transmission, windows, rear hatch, seats, climate control, transfer case actuator, etc. I will admit power mirrors and locks are nice. Having to ask your passenger to roll down the window and push the mirror slightly to the left is annoying. Power steering sure is nice for off-roading, but it's not necessary most of the time. I can use some arm strength in parking lots and driveways.

I don't want a color touchscreen. Buttons and LCD displays are easier to use without looking, and easier to read in all lighting conditions. Unfortunately back up cameras are going to be mandatory at some point (maybe they already are), so screens are going to be mandatory. The rear mirrors in the 4th gen are a good idea, but they didn't catch on. I don't need radio, a CD changer, DVD player, navigation, or even a tape deck. I definitely don't want satellite radio (each channel just shuffles the same 200 songs, interspersed with ads) and the shark fin that comes with it. My smartphone can do all of that better than anything built-in (my old phone even did FM radio!). All I need it an aux input and a volume knob.

I don't want a climate control system with a mind of it's own. I don't want it to decide that it's warmer than 70 degrees inside now, so it's OK to start blowing cold air in the winter, or decide that it's below 70 degrees, so it should blow the hottest air possible. I want a lever that moves a damper that sets the temperature of the air that comes out.

I don't want your stupid plus sized wheels, Toyota. They are fine on the street, but they have no place on an off-road truck. Smaller wheels for the same size tires (more sidewall) have better off road performance and the tires are cheaper. Sure, the brakes have to be a certain size, but 17" seems to work fine with even the biggest brakes. 18-20" is unnecessary.

I don't know how power liftgates are these days, but we used to have a minivan with power doors. You couldn't slam them shut, you have to wait 10 seconds for it to slowly close. If it was raining or cold it felt like forever. I'd rather have something I can slam shut. How else am I supposed to vent frustration?

In Colorado the weather is nice enough most of the time that I don't even need air conditioning.

If they would stop adding all these features that belong in a Lexus to base-model Toyotas then maybe more people could afford new ones. The median income household is $51,900 and the average new car transaction price is $31,021 (both 2013 numbers). The only reason most people can buy new cars is cheap financing, but even then that much debt is unhealthy for a family making around the median.

The I4 might have worked if they had made the 5th gen 400lbs lighter than the 4th gen instead of 400lbs heavier. They have some catching up to do if they want to make an I4 work. There's probably a few hundred pounds of electric motors listed above, so that's a good start.

Wait a minute, what is a Hilux Surf? The wikipedia page says its made in Japan and looks like our 4Runner.
