Wait for 6th gen 4runner?

Who is saying that? My dealer tried to get me to wait for the 6th gen. Everything I have heard is "New Tacoma, new 4runner the year after." It would seem a little bonkers to cancel a vehicle whose sales are trending up.
It would not surprise me for them to cancel it in current form. Overall. Toyota is getting softer and I'm sure they don't see a long term future for the 4Runner as a BOF SUV in the US market. I hope that is not the case though.

Even if sales are trending up... They may not be making any money on it. With new CAFE standards coming... might just be cheaper to cut it.

I would pray for a 6th Gen period. Talk is that Toyota will NOT have another 4Runner..

4Runner sales are at a 7 year high and climbing - Toyota has every incentive to keep it going. They have consolidated the lineup by moving the FJ customers into the 4Runner as the brand's masculine SUV, and have responded by making it more aggressive to differentiate it from other vehicles in the line.

This is good news, as the 4Runner is in it's own clear segment - one in which it's facing less competition as other brands soften their SUV's. Toyota does not need to soften the 4Runner, as it already has the wildly successful Highlander - and is clearly embracing the 4Runner's position as the "tough" SUV option.

I'd be curious to hear any creditable (or even somewhat creditable) sources for discussions around discontinuing the 4Runner.

Why would they come out with a "pro" version of a product that they are going to kill off a year later? Sounds like very poor project planning if that's the case.

something I can see them adding to the LE probably as standard.

First, a technology gets better, then it gets a lot better, then it gets less expensive, then it gets a lot less expensive. Advanced driver safety and convenience systems are about to make that last step thanks to Toyota. Centered around a pre-collision braking system, there will be three suites of driver aids known as Toyota Safety Sense C (TSS C) for compact cars, Toyota Safety Sense P (TSS P) for midsized and premium cars, and Lexus Safety System+ (LSS+) for the luxury brand.

TSS C pairs a camera with laser radar to provide a pre-collision system that prompts the driver to brake if it detects an impending accident, and can supply additional braking force and automatically brake between seven and fifty miles per hour. There are also Lane Departure Alert and Automatic High Beam.

TSS P pairs a camera with more precise millimeter-wave radar. Starting with the three functions in TSS C, it adds pedestrian pre-collision capability and adaptive cruise control. This one will be available first, coming on the new RAV4 Hybrid and Avalon. TSS - either C or P - will expand to three more vehicles by the end of the year. The wallop is in the price: TSS C will be a $300 option, TSS P will cost $500.

Compare the Ford Fusion SE, for instance - it's Driver Assistance Package comes with Lane Departure Warning, Automatic High Beams, it has Lane Keep Assist, Blind Spot and Cross Traffic Detection that neither TSS has, but doesn't have any autonomous braking feature. It costs $1,200, but requires you to add the Technology and Luxury Packages for a total price of $3,165. If you want Autonomous Cruise Control, that's another $995, for $4,160 in total. Instead of $300 or $500 on the Toyota.

Lexus' LSS+ will come first on the new RX then spread to four more models by the end of this year, and cost between $500 and $635 to add as an option. It also uses a camera and millimeter-wave radar for its vehicle and pedestrian pre-collision system, lane departure warning and lane keep assist, automatic high beam, and auto cruise control. The similar package on a BMW X5, with no pedestrian component, is $1,200.

Toyota says both safety suites will eventually be on "nearly all" of it products and all trim levels by the end of 2017.

original article : Toyota, Lexus will offer low-cost automated braking system

We just got a new 2015 Honda CR-V Touring for my wife. It has the lane departure warning, the front collision assist, the cruise control that will keep you a safe distance from the slowest guy on the interstate, the don't back up over the dog braking system and the don't swerve right because there is a car there thing. She loves it and chose that one over the new RAV-4 because it did not have all of it. Hey, it's what she loves to drive.

The 5th gen is the Rental 4×4 of the year up here in Rocky Mountain tourist land. Every time I turn around I see another one with a little bar code sticker on the window.

Dropping the 4Runner has nothing to do with sales.. and everything to with MPG standards and requirements from Obama on the entire manufacturer.

Sales do matter, because if it's profitable then they will spend the money on R&D to meet any government requirements. It's nothing unique to the 4Runner; the same challenges face every manufacturer that has a fullsize SUV and/or pickup truck.

The requirements are surmountable, as manufacturers are switching to lighter materials, more efficient engines and transmissions, and hybrid powerplans.

I would imagine, based of CAFE standards, that the Suburban, Tahoe, Expedition, Escalade, QX80, Wrangler Unlimited, etc. would get canceled before the 4Runner would have to be. All of their makers do not have the small vehicle offset that Toyota does for their CAFE ratings. With the 3.5L V6 from the new Tacoma the new 4Runner should be significantly more efficient than the current 4.0L. I just look at all the 13/18mpg V8 SUVs out there and I cannot see the 4Runner leaving before they do.

If they ever discontinued the 4runner I hope they will either introduce the Prado to the American market or offer lower/cheaper trim levels of the Land Cruiser.

I've certainly said that before. I think a 4Runner/GX/Prado Land Cruiser in the North American market would sell like hotcakes. All other things equal, who here would not rather say they own a Land Cruiser instead of a just a Toyota?
I totally understand they did not want to cannibalize sales of the GX, but if they drop the Lexus GX they MUST keep the runner or go one step better and add the Prado.

personally I wouldn't want the prado simply due to the barn/swing door on the rear (the GX has the same door).

the LC on the other hand has a lift gate (4runner also).

after having the old 2009 rav4 with a barn/swing door, I hate it. cant use it inside the garage and it really sucks when it -20F outside and I cant pull into the garage to unload groceries.

The Land Cruise is already available, the LC they show would need to be called the mini LC. It has no relation to the real Land Cruiser

They should update the interior of the 70 series LC and bring it over here. Problem solved.

I guess this person in Toyota USA has no idea what they are talking about then huh? P.S. I bought my 4Runner under Toyota and Lexus Vehicle Special Purchase Program...

Does that mean you are a Toyota/Lexus Supplier Employee or their Eligible Family Member ... able to purchase an eligible vehicle at a Participating Dealer at a Preferred Price + all the most legit info about future plans?

Fake News

This is what I have heard from a buddy that owns a Toyota.

The next gen 4runner will be launched in the JDM market in late 2018 and arriving in the US in late 2019 for the 2020 model year. This is a complete redesign from the ground up.

Fuel economy and environmental impact are at the front of the new design effort. They are marketing the 6th generation 4runner as family friendly multi-duty people hauler for the adventure. This new platform will retain the same luxury comfort of the current generation while increasing the fuel economy to 32city/25 highway MPG for the SR5 model. They will be following the queues from several of the best selling SUVs on the market, the Nissan Pathfinder, Ford Explorer, Mercedes M-Class, and Honda Ridgeline while exceeding their environmental impact scores.

The motor will be the 23RE motor; the E is for Economy. The power plant is a follow on to the iconic and rock solid 22R motor from the original Toyota Trekker. The configuration is a single turbo 1.8L, 16 valve 4 cylinder. The 23RE motor makes use of high tech variable crank arm and variable valve timing technology to produce 167 HP. These features maximize economy and power, while maintaining a quiet sound level for passenger comfort. The Trail model comes with standard hybrid electric drive motors that adds 33 HP for in town cruising and rock crawling with the Trail model. The total horse power rating is 200 HP with the A/C not engaged.

They only transmission option is the 7 speed automatic with F1-Style paddle shifters as part of the Sport package. The SR5 and Limited drive train will be full time FWD. The Trail model gets a beefy AWD systems with Rock Crawl mode. The 4WD low is replaced by smart electronics and a what is called a torque doubler. The torque doubler is driven by the two high torque electric motors from the hybrid electric drive system. This option is only featured in the Trail. When in Rock Crawling Mode the entire electric drive system, torque doubler, and steering can be controlled from your smart phone while standing outside the truck. This allows the driver to exit the vehicle and safely observe while the vehicle navigates the obstacle.

The archaic body on frame design is replaced by body attached front and rear sub-frames. The body acts as the primary structural support and crash safety cage, with front and rear sub frames for suspension and engine attachment. This keeps integral rigidity for crash safety with the durability of a traditional full frame vehicle. It also lightens the vehicle by 30% from the current generation which helps achieve the new Eco-freindly MPG.

The new lighter chassis combine the high efficiency motor propel the next generation down the 1/4 mile in just over 17 secs. This is a tick slower than the current generation; however, who need to go fast with a car load of kids?

The 4 wheel long travel McPherson Struts suspension will sit atop 225/55R17 Michelin Defender LTX M/S Highway All-Season radials for the SR5 and Trail models. The luxurious Limited model gets a 19" wheel package featuring red pin stripes and General G-MAX AS-03 Ultra High Performance All-Season Radials

If your still reading this and getting upset, look at the title of the post. I'm sure this will be a ground breaking design and can't wait to get one in my garage.:naughty:
