Want to add 3rd row seat to Sport Edition

Obviously the Sport Edition didn't come with 3rd row seats.

Has anyone welded/installed 3rd row seats to a 4runner that didn't come with 3rd row seating from the factory.

The only thing missing on my truck is all the actual mounting hardware. I am sure I can find a pair of 3rd row seat from a totaled 4runner somewhere.

I like to explore the option of installing 3rd row seating to my Sport Edition.

I read it somewhere in the forum here that you CAN'T install 3rd seat in Sport Ed. The XREAS prevent the installation of 3rd row seat.

What does XREAS have to do with 3rd row seating? I highly doubt those 3rd row seat mounting have anything to do with it.

Afterall the Limited version - have both (1) 3rd row seats and (2) XREAS as options.

Let me chime in. I have 3rd row seats. The mounting hardware as well as the mounting brackets on the floor of the cargo area are well integrated into the moulding and floor itself. The seatbelt anchors are also integrated into the floors and the seat belt stirrups are where your backup mirrors are on the D-pillars. I have no mirrors there obviously. Needless to say it is a very substantial mod to say the least if it where even possible. There are also hand grips above the rearmost windows so that when folded up the third row "hangs" form the grips a'la Landcruiser style. I don't think it would be even worth it since the moulding would have to be completely replaced in the back cargo area.

The only saving grace is that they can be removed completely when not in use. I wish I never had them because it gives you almost ZERO cargo room when locked down. Be warned.

Why go back. I traded a 05 Sienna XLE w/ 9000 miles for this 05 4runner.

Sequoia would of been a better recommendation.

Originally I was thinking of using the third row seating for strapping down a child seats for the little one. If it made senses to mod/mount/install third row seating. I could also go without the seat belt since all child seats uses the LATCH system.

I guess for those once in a blue moon trip were I am short a seat or two. I will just have to lap the smallest one and put the older one in the cargo area and take it easy from point A to point B.

So let me get this straight..... you're planning on perhaps having a larger family --- which means you would be strapping kids into third row seats that would be rigged up and not fully tested for safety? I'm not sure I would want to trust my kids' safety to such a setup.

Is it legal in your state to have the child in your lap? I thought it was illegal in most states. Don't want you to get in trouble over something like that.

I don't think the third row can be added at all. The floor on trucks with the third row are different than ones with just two. The second row is different to allow access to the third row. IMO, an SUV is horrible for a people mover over four people. The third row on SUVs are very small, even on the Sequoia the comfort is very limited and for short trips around town.

3rd row in an SE? Nope. Why do this? Get the Limited if you want the 3rd row, the only thing you'll miss from the SE is the hood scoop. You would need to do some extensive retrofitting for seat anchors, selt belt anchors and tethers, and interior plastic, plus the modifications to the 2nd row to allow access. Besides, the factory 3rd row is fully tested and conforms to all DOT requirements, this would be difficult to prove the safety of these add-on seats in the event of an accident.

Thanks for all the comments - everyone. Kinda gave me a reality check. When the time does comes - I will consider a Limited 4Runner. Hopefully by that time - Generation 5 will be the current model.

Even if it were possible, after all the big money you put into it you won't get it back in resale value. In fact you are jeapordizing the resale by having an uncertified vehicle (if someone clues into the mod) or you spend even more money to certify the mod. It's cheaper to trade up.

You did the right thing by taking a reality check.

I have 2005 SR5 with the 3rd row and it is great for our 5 person family. Adults up front, 8 YO and 1 YO in the second row and 4 YO in the third row seat. I usually only have one seat in the back and it still gives you a decent amount of storage space back there.

We are going to buy a cargo carrier for the roof for when we need to haul a lot of junk for a trip.

If your interested I bought an SR5 with leather option and it happened to come with the third row seats i personally have no use for them and would be interested in selling them if you would be interested in them...

While shopping for my 4Runner the dealer informed me that on the 3rd row seating Runners the leg room is less for the middle seats then they would be for 2 row seating.I don't know if this is true or just an uninformed dealer.

True to a point... I think the 2nd row without a 3rd row is on sliders which can give you more room. 2nd row with a 3rd row is on pins which allow the 2nd row to fold and tumble forward.

Yep, the 2nd row with a 3rd row does indeed tumble forward differently. Interestingly, the 2nd row is able to RECLINE back too (quite a ways back too). The headrests for the 2nd row (left and right passengers) are full size too like the front seats.

I'd just wait until about June/July 2008 and see if Toyota is going to lengthen the 4Runner. I too, believe you are throwing a lot of dollars at a mod that will bring you little satisfaction in 2 years. Also, you will NEVER recoup your money back from the resale of your truck.

I believe the storage area floor is sloped lower behind the 2nd row seats to allow easier entry/exit in trucks with the 3rd row seat. The 4Runner without the factory third row seats have a cargo floor that does not allow for maxium movement of the 2nd row seat back to accommendate easy entry/exit. Thus, you will probably have to mod the 2nd row seats too...... which would mean you having to find 2nd row seats that recline and slide from a junked 4Runner or pay big dollars to buy newbies.

Whew! I'm getting tired of this mod already and I'm just talking about it. Just think of all the hard work, money and time you will have to put in it for the actual install. Good luck but I'd just wait until there was more info about the 5th generation coming in 2009 and trade in for it.
