want to add real rear heat

I have a 2007 4x4 SR5. The 2nd row passengers complain about lack of heat control. All there is now is a vent at the back of the center console which only works when the front is set to vent.
Does anyone know what I need to do to put a real heat/control in the back of the center console? I'll put in another console if that is what it takes. Ideas anyone?

BTW: I purchased this 4runner based on a lot of info I found at this sight. This forum is a great resource. Now after 2 years of owner ship I'm posting the 1st time. I was going to buy a new Buick Enclave. After realization of the horrible depreciation on these type of rigs I've decided to just build this one up the way I want it and save some major $s. People in this forum are pretty crafty and gave me the inspiration to do this.
In case anyone has the stuff laying around and want to sell, or provide advise:
1. Front and rear seat heaters. I've read the posts.
2. Power driver's seat: grey cloth
3. Backup camera and monitor, might be related to #6 below?
4. Center console with real heater mentioned above.
5. Heated mirrors: read the posts, too
6: Bluetooth in the stereo; not at all sure what this takes
7. Wood trim, I have that bookmarked, too
8. I'm installing the LuxLink remote start next weekend thanks to a post I read at this site. $297 shipped. Steve there said the are two harness connectors and then 5 other wires to tap, most to the drivers door and ignition switch. If anyone has installed this unit and knows what color the tapped wires are, I'd appreciate if you will post that.

I really don't think another control is possible, well not without a lot of work. You would need another blower motor that the new switch would control. Just give them a blanket.

Let me throw a similar idea back in here. Is there a way to pull heat from any of the controlled settings, I mean can I tap into the air ducts for floor / windshield / and dash vent and route that through the conole? This way there would be heat available regardless of the setting up front.
I have not looked behind the dash and do not know if this is practical.

I am sure you could re-route the ducts. Not sure of the room to do this, I never looked into where they are. If you did I am sure your best bet would be the floor ducts. I would wonder if there is enough power to reasonably heat it if you are again adding a "split" into the system. We all know they blow less when you have them on once combination setting, image that even weaker.

This will be the first thing to try. If it meets your passenger needs, your are done.

There are vents in the center console, and vents on the floor, under the front seats. Make sure the floor vents are not blocked by anything.

I believe the floor vents only flow air when the dash settings are in the right position (I don't know which position). Read the manual to determine how to make sure all rear vents are flowing warm air. Once the rear vents are flowing air, you can close or restrict some or all of the front dash vents, to put more pressure on the rear vents, and increase rear flow.

Take a look at this diagram from the owners manual. Either the center console vents or floor vents should be operational with any vent setting other than defrost. Check to see that the floor vents are not blocked by something rolling around on the floor.

I also don't know about adding any extra controls to the rear, my Trailblazer has them stock, but it doesn't seem to flow the same amount of air that my 4Runner does.

I agree, look under your front buckets and make sure those vents aren't blocked. They're definitely under there - small black plastic vents that come up out of a slit in the carpet, mid-seat.

As for the console-rear vents, I think they flow pretty good. I've yet to ride in the back seat of mine so I can't say for sure. My wife says they do OK. When I tore my console apart to install my Sirius radio I noticed the vent feed running along the driver's side of the shifter, and noticed it was quite large in diameter, so it technically should flow nicely. Depending on the strength of the fan I guess...

Cheap and impressive? Install rear seat heaters. They'll be toasty, and it's way less complicated than running separate heat. I installed in my cloth front seats, worked very well, with only about 5 hours and $200 invested.
