Want to get better engine need help please

I just went back and read some more....well here are your options:

1. Sell your rig and buy a v8 domestic 4wd(i know you wont).

2. Swap in chevy v8(again, i know you wont).

3. TRD s/c(i think you will get tired of 240whp in a 4000 lb SUV), and the intercoolers arent very effecient so as IAT's rise and timing is pulled your 240whp becomes about 200whp....LAME.

4. Do a single or twin turbo setup(dont go too big). Small turbos spool very fast...so fast you cant even feel the turbo lag(what the one guy is calling off/on) ex: srt-4, volvo 5-cyl turbos, bmw 335, etc.

You will need to seek a competent import performance shop(one that specializes in Supras most likely). One other option...at some point someone will try to talk you into is a Supra 2jzgte swap...id steer clear. I considered this but the stock turbo/manifold wont clear the firewall and making everything fit(pwr str, a/c, etc) will be the full 10K before you make any real power.

$10k spent wisely with the right shop and setup should equal a useable 400+whp/400+wtq turbo v6 4runner.

A 2jz would be superb with modification to get it to fit.

But I would go with a 7mgte for many reasons. Enough with that.


Since people are saying 1uz(lexus V8) I say get a 1uz long block and a 2uz and swap over the rods out of the 1uz to the 2uz since they're thicker if you plan to boost it at all. The outer dimensions of the 1uz is the same as the 2uz. So all ya need to do is use the 2uz pistons and swap out blocks. The 1uz heads work with the 2uz block but not only that you'll full people when they wanna look under the hood and see what appears to be a 1uz ;) Sorry I'm a little rusty on the V8's haven't messed around with them in a good while :(

If not the 2uz is plenty for ya. Was able to take my Tundra anywhere it wanted to go and tow really well.

I don't plan to do this actually, but it wouldn't be any harder than doing any other conversion. It can sit orientated any way it wants as long as it physically fits.

I understand your aversion to turbo's, but it sounds like you've played with some poor setups. I agree that the supercharger gives a more even power boost right across the rev range, being directly proportional to the revs, but ultimately its the right foot that's controlling everything. I've had great fun off-roading with turboed engines, just crawling along at almost idle for the most part, but then stomping on it when I need the turbo power. Plus turbo's are more efficient.
 
Perhaps you guys are right about turbo's and I will keep my mouth shut until I get a chance to run one properly set up.

techno - regarding the 2gr, so IF you could even mount a transverse engine longitudinal, which transmission do you plan to mate it up to?

Good luck connecting a transmission (or transaxle) to a transverse engine mounted longitudinally in a vehicle set up for RWD. That would be the ultimate backyard mechanic's engineering marvel!

I wouldn't have clue. Since this thread is about engine options, I'd start by by using the stock transmission and design an adapter.

So why do you guys think rotating an engine 90° is such a big deal? Whats the difference from any other non-factory engine option? You align the engine longitudinally, customize the mounting brackets, make an adaptor plate for your choice of transmission (obviously not a transaxle ToyTech99, that would be silly).

I see no reason it can't be done. It's just a suggestion, since it's an excellent and powerful engine. I'm not saying it will be easy, but it won't be significantly harder than anything other V6.

2UZ is the 4.7 v8 found in the Land Cruiser if I'm not mistaken.

I would guess that the 3UR is the 5.7 from the new tundra/sequoia, but thats just a guess...

Guys if people are swapping in the 1uz(4.0) guess what the 2uz(4.7) is the same swap. The 1uz heads and top end will bolt to the 2uz block. I've been saying that for sometime now.
Seen it happen in alot of sc400's whom plan to boost. the earlier 1uz rods are thicker then the 2uz rods as well.

Anyhow mounting a FWD engine in a RWD platform is doable.. I've seen it done many times. Especially with the camry's V6 engines in AE86 corolla's and earlier toyota's.

It's possible with time, fabrication skills, and money.

You make it sound so easy!! :D First, let me clarify and say NOTHING is impossible. A sheep was cloned, we've been to the moon, and got a black president.

Ok, for this project, I hope you have money coming out your chimney to fund this. Every single piece will need to be custom. Motor mounts down to the ECU and other wiring doo dads. And did you say an "adapter" for the tranny?? WHO would even want to take on such project and what ridiculous figure will they charge? Not worth the time or money to me. Why go through that when you've already got plenty of other RWD specific engine/tranny to work with? Even those won't be simple.

Thought I'd post this. I would love to do this, but I don't have the expertise to do so. However, checkout this website! Great resource! This is a 3rd Gen T4R with a 1UZ swap successfully done, and there's another done with a tacoma.
