Warning: Eimkeith PCK, Interference w/ Stock Bumps

Heads up to folks running Eimkeith's PCK - I recently discovered some substantial frame-bracket crunching. See photos.

I'm surprised to see something like this from Keith, always been impressed with his stuff. Easy fix at least!

Did you not take into consideration That having longer travel might cause parts to come together? It's not the Eimkeith bracket fault. You need to be running longer bumpstops at the very least.
 
I’ve been running mine for a long while. I do have DuroBumps though so who knows.

Sorry, but not seeing the logic here. What does long travel have to do with longer bumpstops? As I understand it, the purpose of longer bumpstops is to run big tires with less trimming/no body lift. I personally have no problem cutting my body apart to stuff big tires all the way up. If my shocks can handle the up-travel, why would I give it up if I don't have to?

A warning is fine. The way you have your post worded, however, is to indicate that the issue is with the part when it clearly is not with the part but with the installer. You make it seem like the part is at fault here.

I think it's pretty reasonable to assume that Keith's bracket would clear with stock bumps. If it doesn't (perhaps my case is an anomaly), he should be the one issuing a warning, not someone on a forum. FWIW, I emailed him a month ago or so about this and got no reply.

Not digging on Keith at all - like I said, I think he makes great stuff.

Extended bumpstops would achieve this goal with a stock setup, however, that is not the reason people run them with long travel suspensions. Long travel shocks bottom out before the stock shocks because they have a longer shock body on factory mounting points. Therefore, companies recommend using spacers or extended bumpstops to prevent damage to the shocks. Sometimes extended bumpstops are also required to ensure the longer coils associated with long travel setups are not over compressed and damaged

Like this warning from Dobinsons' website
2" bump stop extensions and longer rear brakes line is required

For reference, the stock length rear Dobinsons shocks are 389mm compressed, and the long travel rear Dobinsons are 438mm compressed - a difference of about 1.9" - hence the need for 2" bumpstop extensions to keep the shock from overcompressing

I've never heard of any clearance issues with the EimKeith PCK, but who knows. Looks like some pretty minor contact, so maybe your bumpstops are just old and worn out so they compress a little more than intended. Just grind a little off the top of the bracket and you'll be fine

I'm running this PCK with no issues on my rig.. what sort of lift are you running..? I would question whether you're even tall enough to have needed the PCK..?

This. I too am running it without issues. And I don't have extended bump stops. I suspect the PO is close to stock height and didn't require the PCK in the first place.

This is still user error and not an issue with the product. Saying that eimkeith should have a warning about this is ridiculous. It's the end users responsibility to endure proper fitment and clearances.

This is totally digging on eimkeith and his products.
 
There seem to be two points of disagreement here.

1) I had a problem with something Keith made, and shared it so that other people can hopefully avoid denting their frame as well. I didn't intend for this to be rude towards Keith or anyone else, and if it came off that way, I apologize. Just trying to share my experience, which is the whole point of this forum.

2) I had this problem because I "don't have enough lift". Anyone claiming this either doesn't understand how a suspension lift works or is just being a dick. You can easily have enough lift to get the benefits of the PCK on stock shocks/bumpstops, and this bracket is not designed just for rigs with extended travel/bumpstops (as far as I know). Maybe [MENTION=28464]eimkeith[/MENTION] can chime in, but I think [MENTION=409236]P_nlsn[/MENTION] explained it pretty clearly above.

Hi there! I designed the PCK to be as tall as I could make it and clear the factory outer bumps during articulation - but it can certainly contact if you pull the coil bumps out (it was designed to run with them in)

Now, this isn't a problem for the 99% of folks who pull the coil bumps because even though they lose that 3/16" or so of height from the coil bump base plates, they're typically running longer shocks and extended outer bumps with their lift kit. Extended outer bumps end up doing the work of the coil bumps, which is limiting flat compression travel. I run stock outer and coil bumps, so I designed them with that as the least clearance scenario.

Hope that makes sense?

In your situation, if you don't want to run the coil bumps, I'd probably massage that overhead cross-member where it is making contact with a rounded hammer (shouldn't take much, I wouldn't think.

EDIT: whoops! I THOUGHT I WAS ON THE 3RD GEN FORUM, LOL. Yeah, the 5th gen PCK will touch with flat compression with factory outers at the low setting - just shave that top profile a bit if you're using the lower hole. ;)
(this is actually a revision/tweak that I've discussed with someone in a similar situation about a month or so ago; future parts will have a sloped rear outer face for my 1%ers out there.)

I didn't take it as rude, and that's exactly why I hope forums never fade into unuse.
