Warranty extension for shattered back glass

I came home from a hunting trip this weekend and had a letter from Toyota. They officially offered a warranty extension for shattered rear windows on my 2004 4Runner and are even reimbursing people that have already paid out of pocket.

That's not a problem that I've had but I know others have so I wanted to share.

I have not received the letter yet.

My 03 has been fine. So far... Knock on wood...

It seems like more of a problem with later model years. Has this happened to many 03's?
 
It can happen with unequal heating from the the rear defrost. I'm scared to use mine after reading threads about it...
 
Is this a common problem? I didn't know it until I received the letter. My 2003 is 14 years old and it went through countless cycles of rear defrost without any problem, so I guess the chance of it happening now is slim to none.

I do applaud Toyota's standing behind their product. Who else would still guarantee a possible problem after 14 years? :-)

BTW, my letter said the warranty will expire in 2018.
 
I don't think it's too common, but it's enough of an issue that they cover it. It's probably more likely if you raise/lower the rear window too often, as that can damage the heating elements.

Some of the people who've had the issue have also posted pictures of electrical pieces that power the defrost looking rather burned.

I haven't gotten my letter yet, but from what I've read it looks like they'll cover windows till late 2017/2018? I just hope that if mine's gonna go, it goes before then.

Also, yeah. I love Toyota for things like this. Just had my dash replaced last week for free because of minor cracks in it

My dash cracked on the driver side too. Did Toyota extend the warranty for the dash? What year is yours?

The Warranty Enhancement Program for the cracked or sticky dash boards is for 2003 to 2005 4Runners, if you have one of these year models you need to act fast, this end on the 31st of this month, May 31st 2017!!

You need to take your 4Runner in to any Toyota dealership and let them inspect the dash and run the Vin number, if you qualify, they will put you on the list for a free dash replacement and order the dash for your truck, once you have done this and get on the list your good, they will then contact you when the ordered dash arrives to schedule a time to install it.

ACT NOW, the dash itself cost over $700 and plus the labor to install adds up to around $1100 to $1200 and it's free!!!!

I don't have a photo, mine dash has already been replaced, it looked like a road map it was cracked so bad.
Don't take a photo, if your dash is cracked at all, even a little bit you should be covered under the program, GO TO A DEALER ASAP and get it inspected by them, there's no cost to you, they have to look at it and then run the Vin, TIME IS A WASTING, tell them you have a cracked dash and you need them to inspect it for replacement under the Warranty Enhancement Program, the sooner you do this the better so you get on the list before the deadline!!!

If the dealer tells you it not covered because it's only cracked a little, don't take no for an answer, insist that it should be covered and tell them you going to contact Toyota Corporate because they're refusing to replace the dash because it's only a little crack, these dashes are defective because Toyota changed the formula of the vinyl and it failed, now Toyota is fixing this problem, if they still refuse you go to another dealer, and or contact Toyota Corporate for satisfaction!!

+1 for going to the dealer NOW. No need to make an appointment. Just go to the service department.

I basically drove in, said "My dash is cracked and I'd like to see if it's covered under warranty", they inspected it (minor cracks running the length of it. Not too noticeable), said "Yep, you qualify for the warranty" and told me they'd order it and let me know when the new one came in.

It took 6-7 months for the new one to arrive, but when it did they replaced it in a day and it was good to go! No cost at all to me!

Great Mike, let us know how it goes.

Lately many have been getting their dash much sooner now that the majority of these dashes have already been replaced, in the beginning of this warranty coverage many had to wait at least a year and some even longer for their dashes to come in to the dealer, as you can imagine since Toyota had to setup the machinery to make all of the replacement dashes, that the back order was tremendous, if everyone that owns these year models got in the line to have them replaced the total number of new dashes would be upwards to around 300,000 to 400,000.
