watches...

Tourneau is a great place to feel a watch, not buying it unless you want to pay retail as almost none of them will sell with discount but you can be 100% sure it will be genuine piece, market full of fakes, replica as crooks calling it.

Yup, Tourneau is a decent place if you want a "sure" thing. But, you pay for the authenticity guarantee. For me, I rather spend a little bit more to get the real thing. I got a high end watch once thru a trusted eBayer and it turned out great. He had great rep...so, I had no problem turning over money to him for a NEW product vs. used via Tourneau....basically the same price.

true that,
for a watch enthusiast Tag, omega ,rolex, hamilton is far from hi end.

In just the watch that you mention, you can get one for $700 to one that is over $25,000.

PP is a great brand...and it got its rep thru hand-built goodness and rare materials. Rolex built it thru quality build with controlling the price closely of their watches. So, Rolex has the best re-sale value of any watch, bar none. Demand is still quite high for Rolex on the USED market.

Man... All this talk of 'high end' sounds like 'staus' rather than the quality of the movements... Just saying..

Or rarity, materials, etc. Am I right? What's not good about the movements in my Movado, it my Seiko 5? Not "high end", but not paying out the a** with my middle class money either :)

ETA movement is good, but there is also some compromise to keep its price low. Movado uses mainly ETA movements with no (or very little) modifications.

Seiko 5 movements are very rudimentary. Reliable.

Part of being high end movement include: in-house, rare materials (e.g. gold), hairspring design/material, breguet overcoil usage, coaxial, precision, COSC-cert (regulation quality), etc..

If you want to compare Rolex movement (for example) to Seiko, then you need to use GRAND Seikos, not Seiko 5!! Comparing Rolex to Seiko 5 is like comparing 4runner to Yugo and saying that it is the same since it has an engine and 4 wheels!

If you don't have the means to pay for high-end watches and are satisfy with Movados and Seiko 5s, then more power to you! But, don't insult the high end brands by comparing Seiko 5 to a Rolex/Omega/etc..

Citizen Men's CA0020-05E Eco Drive Strap Watch: Watches: Amazon.com

Will then upgrade from there if I feel the urge. I may or may not. One step at a time. The help and comments from all of you is truly appreciated.

That Citizen is a DAMN GOOD BUY!! I would buy it immediately! A great watch IMHO!

On my way home tonight I stopped at Macy's in Herald Square and tried one on. It is indeed a very nice watch except for one stupid thing they did to it - they put white stitching in the black leather band. Otherwise, a great watch at a nice price. Guess I could always get a different band.

I just came across this though that may have won me over. Let me know what you think.....

For me, if I was going to buy Quartz, then I want something that states, "...NEVER needs a battery." Thus, I like Eco-Drive and Seiko's Kinetic. And then you add in Sapphire crystal and it becomes a hard find...so, that is why I think that Citizen above is such an amazing find...and cheap too!!

Or at least, a "super" Quartz watch with 10 yr battery life...a rarity...I think that Breitling Quartz watches are super Quartz rated.

I see that you like chronographs...is that a must? For me, I favor simplicity...dial & date only.

Are you saying Tag, Omega, and Rolex are NOT "high end"? Or is your grammar just referring to Hamilton only??

The Movado was from my wife for a wedding present. Not "manly", but I love it due to that, and that's what my Seiko 5 Sport is for.

I'm still wondering why you say some pieces are "high end" and I still say it's status, rarity, "maker" (some old a** dudes hand making/etc) that makes a watch "high end". Kinda like a ridiculous designer purse for women, or all their "high end" clothes.... Tell me I'm wrong?

Define a "watch guy" for me please... Do you mean that I'm not a "watch snob"??

That is exactly what i was saying, follow the link in my previous post and educate yourself on the matter if you really want to know. having patek, AP, etc does not make you a watch guy just like owning 4runner not making you offroad guy either. understanding what it takes to make a great watch and craftsmanship behind it does. watch snob is completely different thing though...

That CW looks great, good price too.

How about this: Longines Hydroconquest 41mm Automatic Watch 100 Perfect Purchased Jan 2013 | eBay

Seller is private...so, some risk. But, you do have eBay protection. ETA 2824 is a stout mechanical movement.

Tag Heuer Mens Formula 1 Black Dial Stainless Steel Quartz Watch WAU1110 BA0858 | eBay

NEW LONGINES SPORT COLLECTION HYDROCONQUEST MENS WATCH L3.640.4.96.6: Watches: Amazon.com

Hamilton watches are pretty good...good price for mechanical automatics!

Yes, they are expensive...but I like to spend other people's money! :D

Now Thai - where did I actually compare my $150 Seiko 5 to Rolex/Omega? I'm on Tapatalk and already started my reply and too lazy to check at this point.. Lol. At the end of the day, not many people even really know any difference.

I really don't feel like battling you both on who knows more/spends more/etc. I still think it's like an art gallery/expensive purse for women/fancy French clothes designer -- "who are you wearing thus evening?"

I take it you make much much more money than me and I'm some poor chap - that must be it! "Please Sir - may I have another?"

I won't bother you on this thread any longer..

I've been really happy with my Luminox Colormark. It's really held up well at work (firefighter/EMT). Just be careful dropping them. A buddy of mine dropped his on a tile floor and a few tubes fell out. Should be covered by warranty though. Highly recommend!

I understand that you don't have the funds to buy a more expensive watch...that's OK, but you are saying that an expensive watch is just a status symbol and not really about what is inside it. Well, THAT notion is just plain 100% wrong. And I gave you many reasons why. Again, please refer to my 4runner-Yugo comparison. I am not sure why this is so hard for you to understand.

The same can be said about a LV purse vs. a Walmart brand purse. If you think that it is just the brand name and that both purses are the same in quality and build, then well, you are the typical Civic guy who compares his supped-up Civic to a Ferrari. Not a good thing. :tape2:

A poor chap does not need to be ignorant of better things simply because he can't afford it. I can't afford a Ferrari F430, but that does not mean that the F430 is just like my Prius except for the brand name, right? :bigok: That would be ignorant of me to think that way.

Thanks but none of these strike a cord with me. I like chronos but those that are subtle, classy, and professional. Nothing overbearing with thick numbering etc. I went through Seikos entire website and came out with nothing that struck me.

I think it will be the Citizen, a Hamilton, or the CWard. I have to be patient and keep looking.

True that! BTW your prius probably consume as much fuel in a week as that F430 in one trip to the store... in that matter much more superior car, don`t you think? Seiko5 cost 100 times less then Omega- while doing same task- showing time.
any expensive thing is status symbol if you like it to be.

I crashed riding a motorcycle wearing Ball watch, every gas tube stayed in place even after broken sapphire crystal. $1200 later was looking like new again. BTW watch insurance is very cheap, mine about $10 a year with replacement guarantee.

I really don't even need to reply to this. Your words proved every point I was trying to make, so thank you.

And yes - 100% agree.

I'm just going to leave this here... I wanted to be done with this thread - but your post actually ticked me off.. I really don't want to get into crap here, and I do know you're talking about a Kinetic - not a 5, but still, I think this needs seen. I thought you had just said how much "better" Rolex and Omega are... But yet here you are saying exactly what in getting at... Yes I'm sure they are "better", but a Ferrari vs. Civic is a bad example. Same with your Yugo. You're talking about some ticking seconds here Thai... Now if you compare a Civic to a Civic that is clad in gold, and had some famous car guy put his signature on it and change some parts to parts that make it just barely faster ("arguably" slightly more accurate/etc) , then you have a better comparison. "I don't know why that's so hard for you to understand!". Don't call me ignorant man...

And I think you made a lot of presumptions of me from my previous sarcasm...

I know you might have helped start this forum and have like 15,000 posts and feel like you can say whatever you want, but I think I'm not the only one on this forum (maybe not this thread however) that thinks you're just frankly abrasive a little too often Thai.

Oh, was that sarcasm that you wrote? Seems like ignorant rants by you from a "poor me" perspective. :toilet:

Is a Prius more reliable than F430? Yes. Is a Corolla more reliable than Porsche GT3? Yes. Does it mean that these vehicles are the same? No. Really, did I have to explain that to you AGAIN?

Oh yeah, I have no doubt that my Kinetic is more accurate, more reliable, more resistant to shock, and has lower maintenance than my Rolex with the 3135 movement. No argument. BUT, does that mean that the Rolex is a status symbol and not really worthy? NO! A mechanical movement will NEVER be able to compete with a Kinetic or Quartz in the accuracy and reliable category.

But, what makes a mechanical watch special? It is like a beating heart on your wrist. The tick-tock is like your heart pumping. It is put together in a very complex way so that it is self-sustaining just from the motion of your arm. No electrical power in the traditional sense. All due to levers, bearings, balances, etc.. No battery. THAT is what makes it special. It is an interaction of 200+ tiny parts together that makes it go tick-tock. I love it.

Even though I have a Kinetic, why do you think that I wear my Rolex most of the time? Status? Nope. (Why do you think I sold my G-wagen for a Prius?) I wear my Rolex because it intrigues me greatly...I appreciate the design of it even though wearing it may make it run into the ground that much quicker (thus, needs maintenance). But, hey you gotta pay to play, right?! :D That was why I bought an Omega Coaxial when it first came out...that "technology/design" was breathtakingly fresh!

Now, as for your Seiko5...wonderful movement...how often can you get an automatic movement in a $50 watch?! I had one. It was horribly inaccurate, even by mechanical standard. It died on me after a few years. Never got another one...because you might as well buy another new one. Yeah, it can tell time (somewhat), but when you open it up, it is a rather plain jane movement with cheap components. Again, please refer to my 4runner-Yugo analogy.

So, yeah, what you wrote sarcasm or not is ignorant...esp, when you keep coming back to reinforce your "sarcasm."

Hope you understand. Abrasive? You coming into this thread to state an ignorant opinion is not abrasive? You better look in the mirror. Thanks.

Oh yeah, keep searching my posts dude.

(And yeah, I love that 04rnr is again backing anyone who criticizes me...pathetically sad that he roams this forum looking for it!) :)
