Water Everywhere

Here’s an observation – I have a 2012, this must be the worst sealed vehicle I have ever owned. When it rains, going thru a car wash after when you open any of your doors or back there is water in all the jams, it does not come into the car but it is everywhere else. The truck is simply not sealed very well, it seems to be in the engine area but nowhere else. Where the water does enter leaves this area very dirty, and in Massachusetts where I live all of these areas will permit salt. I figure on rust problems down the road, but what a PITA to keep these areas clean. Anyone else have notice this compared to other vehicles?

Nope..not seen this in my T4r at all. When I wash it there isn't a whole lot of water in the engine bay or the door jams.

You better go trade it in real soon and get something else. I hear those new Pathfinders are real sweet. Oh the Jeep Grand Cherokee might be another option.

WAT? It is poorly sealed, but no water passes the seals?

Seams like these places behind body work but outside of rubber seals would be pretty well protected as far as paint is concerned, so rust shouldn't be an issue.

It's every door jam, and the back. The engine area is not a problem at all, just every where else.

I find the truck to be well sealed. However, the 5th gen is such a large vehicle (the biggest I've owned), there are a few channels that are formed between the actual seal and the outer edges of the doors and tailgate. As with all my vehicles, I make it a habit to open up all the doors and the liftgate to dry out those areas when washing my truck. The area that I have noticed collecting the most grime is the area between the rear door seal and the rubber strip on the outer edge of the door that protrudes into the wheel well when shut.

Have not had any issues as you describe with my 11 SR5. My wife's 12 Maxima gets more water in the door jams than my TR4.

Mine is to the point where all bolts attaching all 4 doors to the truck are wet after a wash or driving in rain. I must be missing some weather protection.. off to check the lot tomorrow to see what's going on here.

Yes, there are gaps where crud will accumulate, mostly around the area above the rear wheel well, rear door area, the bottom of the hatch, and above the hatch spoiler. I live in Iowa, and drive alot of gravel and dirt roads in the winter, and this wet crud/salt will freeze in these areas, and make one hell of a mess. i have owned a 3rd, 4th, and now a 5th gen T4R and rust has never been an issue.

There are 2 door seals(they call them weather strips) per door opening,one on the body and one on the door itself. If you get water past those 2, then get back to us and you have something to complain about.

The place it sounds like you talking about is called the door sill, with an i, and is out board of the seals and is normal for water to get there on any vehicle I owned or remember. If there is paint there,which there is, it is not going to rust unless you scratch through the paint.

You would have to show me a vehicle where the whole door is sealed around the outside edge so the sill doesn't get wet.Pics please!

The top pic is an example for the weather strips(#17 and 18) on the body of the 4runner and the bottom one is for on the doors themselves(#17).Mine have always done their job and kept the weather out.

The only one I can think of Harper is if he was driving something like this and traded for the 4Runner.
