Water pump, belt and thermo

Looking to do my water pump, belt and thermostat this spring but i do not know what i am looking for in these items. Most importantly, I do not know what is a good brand, how much to spend or all the items needs i.e. gaskets or seals. I found an Aisin on Amazon, 2 actually and can not tell the difference. the two-options are below: are one of these basically what i am looking for and if so which one?

Other info: Running a 1997 SR5 3.4

the first kit you posted has a pipe on the water pump that goes to the oil cooler on the d/s of the lower engine block. the second kit does not have the pipe and is for the non-oil cooler engine. check behind (front to back) the oil filter on your engine and see if you have a silver colored cylindrical "cooler" in that spot. if so, you need kit #1. That kit is a good kit to buy as for brand names.

Amazon Aisin Kit

Just installed the Aisin "with pipe" kit on my 98 4runner last weekend. Excellent quality and value product. Here in Hawaii, the same components cost triple. With Amazon Prime, no shipping! (big deal out here in the Jungle)

I would avoid the off brands at all costs. The water pump I replaced, installed by the previous owner's so called mechanic, was only about 10K old.

Like toyo says: you have to look at your existing water pump thermo housing to see if you have the additional coolant line connector.

In all, the timing belt, tensioner, bearings, water pump, thermo, etc were easier and faster to install than the new valve cover and plenum gaskets I installed yesterday!

There are a couple great videos on youtube showing some tricks with the timing belt tensioner install... No need to remove the AC compressor! Saved a lot of time. You CAN get to the back bolt on the tensioner! (and get it back in) Use a 1/4" drive "wobble" extension or 1/4" flex connector.

The crankshaft bolt removal can be tricky... My air impact would not crack it. Had to use the "breaker bar, cheater pipe hit the starter" method. Scary, but it worked.

I would take a look and order the correct water pump. Chances are, you need the pipe.... BUT easy to grab a flash light and check it out! On my 98, it was super easy to spot. At the same time, you could put a plug in a short length of heater hose to block the pipe if you don't need it! Kinda getto though....

I will add that if you do have the oil cooler there is a very short curved coolant hose involved that has a hard life - it picks up not only the heat from the coolant it is fairly close to the exhaust manifold.

When I did my timing belt, water pump, etc... I also replaced this hose (I got it from Toyota).

Wear your patient hat when you do it, it is a pain in the butt to get to but if it fails you will be walking and it's highly unlikely that an auto parts store will have one and it's not something you will be changing on the side of the road like the main radiator hoses.
