weird braking issue

Had to slam on the brakes at lunch today and make a complete panic to stop avoid someone who ran a red light. truck was driving fine before this. When I started to drive after this the truck seemed to be in a reduced power mode. had to apply at least 50% throttle to get the truck to move and accelerate. drove about a 1/2 mile and it did not improve so i pulled over shut the truck and restarted and everything is fine? Anyone have any idea what this was?

Interesting... Wonder if one of your calipers froze then unfroze? But I've never heard of that, did you have strong pad smell, or feel heat from one side more than others if you checked?

that was my thought but all the calipers are less than 4 months old. and i did not have a smell. that was what i thought of first as the last time i had to make a panic stop the left rear caliper froze and required replacing so i replaced them all.

There was a recall that updates the software to prevent unintended acceleration. It reduced engine power if you are on the brakes. They call it smart stop, but maybe it's not so smart. Maybe whatever switch or sensor that tells it you are braking got stuck, or maybe the computer thought it was stuck. You should sue Toyota for Unintended Deceleration.

If the brakes were stuck on you would decelerate a lot as soon as you let off the gas. If it was "smart stop" limiting engine power the throttle would be a lot less responsive, but you would still be able to coast.

Its not a brake or caliper issue. I don't know exactly what it is, but the exact same thing happened to me. It does not throw a code right away and when you shut it down and restart it the system resets. Happened over 3 years ago and not a single problem since.

that's probably one way for the computer to protect the engine. the computer seems like it detected an extreme braking which reduced the power to the engine. when you turned it off, it removed the detection and started as normal. remember, if you are driving a manual, the engine would have probably died. if it's running okay now, I would think your truck is fine. that's good info though.

I had a similar problem-turned out that I was 1 1/2 quarts low on trans fluid. When I made a panic stop, the fluid must have sloshed away from the pickup in the -pan, which caused a pressure drop in the trans. This would result in limp mode until I turned the truck off and restarted it. Since correcting the level, no issues.
