Weird Chrome Door Panels

Hi Guys,
I've got some rust on my 4Runner that I'm starting to deal with. And I figure since I'm getting in there with paint anyways, I might as well do it right and get this looking the way I'd like it to look.

Anyways, I want to remove these silly weird chrome panels on my doors. I attached an old photo of my 4Runner I took a while ago.

The chrome appears to be glued on?! Not really sure exactly how they are held on... I noticed that when I did a google image search I couldn't find a single image of them. Maybe its cause I'm in Canada? Anyways, was thinking a heat gun? Maybe they are some how applied through the door and affixed from the inside?

Any experience anyone has with these would be lovely.

I had similar things on my old Suburban. They were held on with double sided trim tape. I started with on of the smallest sections and used a heat gun - just go slow and warm them up. Should come right off. Then used an eraser wheel to get the remaining glue off.

A hair dryer will work too if you don't have a heat gun. Like the previous posted said, just go nice and slow (but not too slow if you're using a heat gun as you can easily overheat an area with one).

I almost bought a Tacoma with those a while back. I researched it and heat gun plus some fishing line should help it come off. I concur with the eraser wheel. If you don't understand how to use the fishing line search "emblem removal" on YouTube.

Good call with the fishing line! Also, never heard of an eraser wheel, had to google it. That wont damage the paint? I expect the paint behind the panels is likely much less faded considering this is a '98 that has been sitting outside its whole life...

If you leave the eraser wheel in one spot too long it will damage the paint.

If you are afraid of the eraser wheel, Goof Off will work with *a lot* more effort... (what I used on my emblems)

Ya, I'd imagine the wheel could damage the paint if I'm not careful. Maybe I'll see how it goes and use a combination if goo gone, elbow grease and maybe some eraser wheel when i run out of elbow grease ;-)
