Weird Noise: sounds like a playing card in the bike spoke

so recently i've had a really strange noise...


it sounds like a card is in the spoke of a bicycle, like when we were kids................. as far as describing the type of sound...


when does it happen? it happens when I'm on the gas lightly....


when i hear it, i've tried shifting the shifter lever into neutral and the sound goes away immediately....


under heavy acceleration or just coasting (no acceleration) i DO NOT hear it...


I only hear it when I'm moving, in gear & light acceleration....:ybrick:

Sounds VERY similar to the early stages of a failing U joint.

Ok so my car just got messed up on the freeway. There was a loud pop... ... & now it just grinds when it's in gear....& doesn't move


So this sounds just led up to me being stranded on the freeway... :-(

I just had my truck towed from the side of the highway...


The only other way I can describe how it sounds now is that it's almost like trying to put it in 4wd when it's in gear, so it makes that grinding noise as like a safety of sorts..

Did you look at the linkage on the transfer case? Best case that was the loud popping noise and it slipped into neutral. Worse case... new tranny. Good luck man.

I was going to suggest you had a friend put a zip tie on your driveshaft, but it sounds like that's been ruled out.

I hope your fix is easy on the wallet and the wrenches.

So....what was it?

His transmission gave up the ghost the other day. Stopped him dead and major grinding while in gear. We thought it might be the flex plate, but after we pulled off the access plate and could see the flex plate spinning while in park, and no noise while in park, we ruled out the flex plate. While under the rig and with it in gear, you can hear loud grinding and the noise is concentrated right under the transmission pan and not the transfer case.

We're going to pull the trans pan and see if there's major metal shavings or chunks in the pan and/or filter but we pretty much know the trans is toast.

Just got this exact noise... except it's clearly something loose, engine and trans have absolutely no effect on it no matter what and I can tell it's heavily affected by bumps in the road. Only thing that affects it is speed (starts like a switch at 40, but doesnt get faster or slower either)... But sounds identical to a card in the bicycle spokes
Does that sound like a flex plate perhaps, or will they only make noise under certain circumstances? Sorry for the dead thread resurrection but it seemed very convenient that the TTTM gang had this similar experience. I've checked literally everywhere for something that could be loose, really hoping it's not drivetrain issues

I just started having the same noise. Had it about 1 week ago and it last maybe 20 seconds as I was just driving along. Today it happened again for 10 to 20 seconds while driving along then stopped.

Did you ever find what was the problem?

Literally just found it yesterday, or at least I think I did. Fingers crossed so far. Mine ended up being the transmission line going to the rad underneath the fan, directly in front of the power steering lines. I must've bumped it when replacing my rack and sending line so the bracket was halfway broken off and was tapping against the fan shroud

Nevermind, I spoke too soon, mine came back this morning. Was a little bit quieter than normal but still there. The only bit of advice I have is that, in my case, its probably located to the front diff and/or CV axles as thats the only thing that was touched both times; both before it started and over this weekend where it seemed to diminish. Hopefully you can get some help with it, I certainly can't.
