weird wind noise from top of doors?

Sorry to double post but I accidentally posted this in general discussion instead of here...

Hey guys I have got a wind noise coming from the top of the driver and passenger side doors. Its a flapping/vibration/faint clicking sound is best way i can describe it. I can't tell if its coming from the front near the windshield or at the back corner behind my head or in the middle. Folding the mirror in didn't work and taping over different areas didn't work either. I saw a thread about a knocking sound in the dash and I think I have heard that as well but mostly what I hear is is at the top of of the windows.

The sound at the top of my window ended up being one side of my factory crossbar not being tight, do you have crossbars installed?

Baja rack from previous owner but i replaced it temporarily with roof rack and cross bars. Exact same wind noise sound in both scenarios. I think it only happens in crosswinds.

I have the same noise with a gobi roof rack. I thought it was maybe the rubber gutter on the driver side getting hit weird with wind. I put some tape over that but still no luck. So add me to the list of this weird noise!

Also; people may mention the fender well liner rattling, I did have this noise as well but I already solved that with some zip ties and double stick tape.

I wondered about the liner/fender flares especially since the mud flaps are off and I have been rubbing on the BM and the plastic around it. Do you have a link for that issue?

If the liner is not the cause in my case then it must be related to the rack installation as opposed to the rack itself. Did you notice the noise before installing the Gobi rack? I briefly had a 2015 TE and it was the quietest truck I have ever owned. This 2016 I have already has 2 strikes against it as I didn't realize how useless and how much space the 3rd row takes up and now this wind noise issue.

Ok I feel certain in my case that it is the drip molding on the roof. It must have been removed and reattached incorrectly when the baja rack was installed by previous owner....or if the windshield was replaced. I haven't confirmed this theory yet. I'm going to try covering it with tape or just removing it completely. Not sure what adhesive to use to reapply it though.

The bottom of the neck is a separate piece of plastic and it is loose enough to vibrate like crazy especially in crosswinds. Temporary fix was wrapping electrical tape all the way around the neck. Taking to toyota today to hopefully get them to fix it under warranty.

update: Toyota is replacing the whole mirror under warranty (I'm at 35,700 miles.....cutting it close!).
This will also fix another issue I had which was the mirror glass distorting in cold weather and causing a double image.

Thank god I found this thread. I couldn't figure out where that noise was coming from. I added some electrical tape to the bottom piece of plastic on the side view mirror and it disappeared!

I know this post is 4 years old but I'm having the same exact issue on a new 2022 Limited. I was messing around with the JBL system the entire test drive not thinking I would have to look for stuff like this on a brand new 4Runner. On the highway it's bad it sounds like the windows down. Now that I notice it this is undrivable and my state does not allow a rescission clause on cars. I've owned this thing for 4 hours and can't stand it.

glad you found the fix, I had to replace a mirror a year ago or so after someone hit mine. Its a quick fix
