weld in lower link

Has anyone welded in the iemkieth lower link mount driver side with out taking down the gas tank? can the gas tank skid be removed and the gas tank loosen up and shoved over.

I'm using a mig welder and I have a blanket that I'm going to cover the tank with

I would be pretty nervous welding that close to the tank even with a blanket, it’s not too hard to drop the tank

If you smell gas I would drop tank, fumes are what get the party started.
I wanted access for welding partly why I dropped tank, fuel pump filter, flush tank, Locker harness, address any rust 3rd coast no worries.

Always best to drop the tank. If you have the faintest smell of gas you can go up like the fireworks display on the 4th of July.

this is good info, as I got the kit and will be hopefully putting on before fall. However I had not planned to drop the tank..had not read that before, but sounds safe and smart.....and thats what I need to be....safe and smart


I guess would also be a good time to slosh out the tank ( remove any goop) change the intank filter....and maybe the pump as preventative....got 240k on it now....

I would rather see you still here then barely living in the hospital with extreme burns. Gasoline fumes are what can really get you.. :-(

I agree....and of course where the garage is, has a gas fired water heater and gas fired heater.....so will have to either shut them down for the day or do it someplace else...but no slab out side.
and of course I checked and timmy has a video on this, for those interested

i’m in the process of welding these supports on, dropping the tank was easier than I expected and 100% necessary to do a good job. Of course my rear strap was rotted away so i only had two bolts holding mine up....

I was trying to do it in one afternoon. It's looking like a full weekend thing now. I guess I'll change the filter in the gas tank and fuel filter now, it has 333333+ miles on it anyway.

I did see the thread with the pictures but they removed the gas tank. I just wanted to loosen the bolts not the fuel line and make some room.

No gas smell I see no problem, a fan blowing on tank area, risk mitigation, I considered it.
Goal is to fix a weak link right, I didn't like level of fixing/Welds with tank in place.
Drive with low gas light on till you scared of running out helps.

When I helped my buddy install his we didn’t drop the tank.. I’m sure it would be easier to access the other side but I doubt anything would happen unless you blow a hole through the tank on accident with the welder... lol..

Gasoline fumes creep everywhere and are wickedly evil when ignited. You should never consider this doing this in a enclosed space. And never in a enclosed garage, not worth the chance of burning down the house or worse over this.
When working with gasoline always have a fire extinguisher at the ready near by.

A,B and C are readily available to the general consumer. So that's the one I got.
What I really want is a CO2 extingisher. B and C rated, a lot less cleanup after the fire.
I learned from a school, I friend lost his car to a fire. He was troubleshooting fuel odors, with no extinguisher near by. By the time he got his extinguisher, fire got too big for the extinguisher capacity.

Class A – Ordinary Combustibles ex: wood, paper, or cloths
Class B – Liquids/Gases ex: gasoline
Class C – Electrical fires
Class D – Flammable Metals ex: lithium, titanium and magnesium
Class K – Kitchen fires ex: cooking oil/fats

You don't need to drop the tank or worry about it, you will be fine. I burned some of these In for someone with the tank in and we were fine. I worked at a welding shop for a while and I welded to the frames of trucks inches away from the filler necks and gas lines all the time.

But to be 100% sure, your best bet is to fill the truck up to the top with foam.

If you have a fuel leak, you have bigger issues to deal with then link gussets lol.

Or just ditch the stock tank for a f150 tank and never worry about the stock tank again! And yes I welded right next to it, and grinded too centimeters from a half full f150 tank when I built the skid plate.
