Weld through primer and rear panhard relocation bracket

Planning on welding a bracket that will move my rear panhard bar up 2 inches on the axle side.

I was planning on cleaning surface of paint and dirt, weld on bracket, clean up weld and then spray with paint.

Do I need to use weld through primer before I weld?
Do I use a special kind of paint after I clean up the weld to protect the bracket?

If you are asking these kinds of questions, you probably shouldn't be altering and welding your suspension mounts.

What is your previous welding experience and where did you obtain this bracket? Was it designed by someone who knows anything about 4 link suspensions?

Dad is a ship welder who will be there with me helping me weld it incase my welds suck, I’ve welded some smaller things and the bolt on trackbar relocation bracket on my Jeep... bracket is by EIM. PCK (Panhard Correction Kits) ? eimkeith.com

So far i have just shot up stuff with flat black spray paint and seem to still get surface rust.

are you also planning on putting a spacer between the UCA and spindle to reduce the angle?


point being, do research and make sure you aren't going to ruin the geometry of the suspension.

Raising the rear trackbar mount on the axle is pretty common thing to do if you look at a lot of lifts kits made by Rock Krawler, Teraflex, JKS, Steer Master, Yeti, Synergy, Artec and Evo all have parts to raise the axle side mount point to level and recenter the rear track bar. I didn't install my rear trackbar relocation brackets on my jeep as I didn't think they were necessary with the little lift I was running back then it definitely helps the handling in the back.

As far as I know this is the first time this particular panhard/track bar relocation bracket has been discussed in the 5th gen section. I'm intrigued.

I understand the concerns over messing with suspension geometry, that's inherent, but I also know from first hand experience that this kind of mod is common in the Jeep world, especially with the JK's.

Jeeper's also often lift their vehicles much higher than the typical 4Runner owner though. That said, from my experience, Jeep's also tolerate lifts less favorably than Toyotas. For instance, my 80 series Land Cruiser came factory with what Jeeper's refer to as "high-steer', with the front track bar and tie rod mounted above the steering arm, instead of below. I lifted my solid axle cruiser over 4" without messing with the steering links at all, whereas my JK required numerous "high-steer" modifications at just 3" of lift to eliminate bump steer and death wobble. Toyota does a pretty good job of engineering their suspension, even at stock form.

Regardless, I don't see need for a rear track bar relocation on a modern 4Runner if you're keeping it at what can be considered "standard" lift heights of 2-3 inches. This begs the question, are you experiencing any negative handling issues? I'm really just interested to learn why you're considering this mod. Then again, if you're a new Toyota owner coming from a Jeep, I can understand why you might think this is a necessary mod, no offense intended, I've just been there myself.

My 4Runner is resting at over 4" of rear lift unloaded, and I don't notice any concerning handling issues. I do have an adjustable rear track bar installed to re-center my axle.

That said, I would be interested to see how this works out on 4Runners running higher rear lifts. Tempted to try it myself, I just haven't experienced any negative handling characteristics that would justify the cost and time of this mod.

No angles, but for quick reference here's my rear panhard, again at over 4" of rear lift, nothing to be concerned at in my experience.

I use weld through primer when I cannot gain access to bare metal after the weld is completed. If you can access everything after then there is no need.

I installed it yesterday and I can report that my rear end did improve significantly with my OME 895E Springs in the back which gave me 3 inches. My rear track bar angle now is pretty much identical and axle location side to side when it was stock. I contacted a couple of fab shops and some of which were planning on releasing bolt on/weld brackets soon.

Overall the rear track bar bracket relocation was a huge improvement even with KDSS.

That’s good to know. I just read through the development pages from the maker, missed that somehow. I’ve recentered my axle already, and I understand how this can improve things, I just never felt like it handled poorly. I’ll peobably give it a shot anyways, it’s an easy mod.

Yeah I definitely recommend it! If you have the ability to do so why not only took us 30 minutes to do everything. Now I’m thinking of doing a rear axle truss because why not lol
