Well, I'm 4Runnerless now.

Just sold my 94. Now trying to decide on a 1st or 4th next. Leaning more towards a 4th so I can tow a trailer. I will miss that 94, it was so clean. If it would have been cost effective I would have had a 3.4 put in it. But I can't do the work myself so this is the next best choice.

I guess i should have clarified. The 4th gen would be my daily. Sell all my cars and only have that one.

4th gen has a better stronger engine than any 3.4
4th gen is a great option. i love all gen 4runners tho. the newer the better haha

Given that towing is on the menu, you pretty much NEED to go with the 4th Gen over the older ones--it's the first one with any real power from the factory (except for the supercharged 3.4).

The sienna is the wife's car. I'm kicking around the idea of getting a camping trailer. The more I look at the 4th gens the more I like them. I didn't really want to deal with any smog cert. issues if I swapped to the 3.4l. I dunno, I'll take some time and figure it out.

I'm with you on the smog cert altering your plans. Damn California! :biggrin1:

The 4.7L would be a great option. I really like them. The only thing that held me back from getting one was their price compared to a 3rd gen.

Although if your camping trailer is gonna be huge you may want to consider a dedicated tow rig (eg pickup). Otherwise, rock on with a 4th. There are a lot of clean ones in CA for a decent price (especially as gas prices keep going up).

Good luck with your search!

A 1st gen was my 1st choice but they are so danged hard to find...
You should go for the 4th gen and leave the 1st gens to the rest of us! :biggrin2:

I'm not getting anything too big camper wise. I think a 4th gen could handle the size I want. I've already ruled out getting a 1st gen. I really don't have the time or resources to work on something like that. They're all yours!

Now if I could just get the rest of the world to "rule out" the 1st gens I may have a chance to find one someday!

If you really can't decide between a 4th gen or 1st gen... Maybe just get both!

Only having one, I'd get a 4.7L 4th gen for sure. 2UZ has excellent power.

Only thing I don't like about the v8 4tunner is that they are AWD. You can't select 2wd ever

Really? That's overkill for most of the year in CA, especially San Diego. Also the always engaged hub puts too much friction, and too much wear on CV Joints/boots- even when you're on 2WD. That's one reason why I'm sticking with first-gen- for the manual hub. (but then again, I'm not towing anything).

The 4th gen looks good, though.

Happy shopping, OP.

yup i didnt know this till a few years back. we just dont see to many v8 runners.

wish it be easier to to make all the locked hubs to manual. i bet if someone came up with it would make some $$ i would buy a set for my tundra just to help save cv boot wear and tear and up the MPG by .1 lol
