Just for everyones reference. This is how i painted my 4runner limited. I think everyone needs to understand a good paintjob, from a crappy one, and why it costs so much money to have it done right. take a look at my estimate, this is ONLY way i would paint a vehicle.

attached is a pdf. take it, read it, any questions post them here. if your wondering why i removed literally everything to paint the vehicle. its becuase if you dont. it will peel around all the edges, no questions asked.

i probably even missed a few things on the estimate, i just did it from memory.

keep i mind this is for PEARL paint job, that is what THREE STAGE MEANS

that said, did you come up with a rotisserie for the 4runner as well? lol

Correct, that is indeed the only way to paint a car. However, I wouldn't be willing to spend that on a 3rd Gen. I had my Grand National repainted about 8 years ago or so. I had that done the same way, ran about $6K.

Collector car, maybe. On a 4runner, not in my lifetime. I'd rather have an OK paint job but a brand new engine and drivetrain.

I don't see anyone here in the U.S getting their 4runner painted over $2500 max. I think you're putting to much work.

Keep in mind that the OP manages a body shop. I'm sure that's not what he paid for the work, he did a lot of it himself. I think what he is saying is that this is what it would run and that it is the proper way to repaint a vehicle.

That's why you do as much of the labor yourself as you can. I took every single piece off mine and had them painted separately and then put everything back together. Taking apart and putting back together yourself would save quite a bit of labor cost. And you get to know your car a lot better.

I know how much a good paint job is - I restored a 65 Mustang and it's expensive and time-consuming.

But if you really take your 4Runner off road (around here anyway) it'll come back like this the first time. Not really too worried about paint on my 'play in the woods' truck. Some armor coating would be nice! Maybe something they paint battleships with would be good. (Most of that is dust but it's still scratched pretty well. It's been out a few times.) When I see a decked out 4X4 (usually a Jeep) I look for scratches - no scratches, it's a mall-crawler.

You get what you pay for and pay for what you need. It's kinda like taken a pocket knife to a sword fight. If your plow'in through the trails the last thing you need is a 8K paint job. I like my rides to look good and function the best it can with the equipment provided. I don't push the capablities to the limits and beyond. But don't pass up a chance to romp down a dusty trail and into tire depth water. Always keeping in mind that if a buffing pad can't remove it I'm not going through it.

That's my comfort level and why I purchased my rides. They are all capable of extremes but I did not buy them to for that reason. I like owning nice looking rides and proud of the compliments I get when I'm in them.

Having a only child with the same passion and a auto customizing shop certainly has it's advantages. Just like the manager of a body shop.

Wow, that's almost 3 times what I paid for my 98 4runner. I usually spend around $600 in materials when I paint a car, but I just do it in my garage.

The best thing you can do is simply take care of your original paint;mine has it's share of trail stripes,dings here and there but is still in great shape for being about 13 years old now and I do wax and buff it once or twice a year but I'd never spend alot of money for a repaint when it's going right back to the trails.

That has to be an insurance quote or something... why would someone spend that much $$$ on a paint job?

I also live in Winnipeg, I would rather take that $$$ and buy a different 4Runner from down south that's never seen winter. That's just a personal opinion though

When I had my 87 painted they charged $2,500... Removed everything, fixed dents, polished chrome pieces, and did an outstanding job...

I don't know how they could have done better, honestly.
