What a good paint job should be.

I used a can of Rustoleum bed liner. But will be redoing it, as I have new ideas.

Anyone here a graphic designer that might be able to help me get my ideas into paper?
 
Lol at people that would pay thousands for paint that does literally nothing. The ultimate form>function right there.

just a hey FYI all ... I painted my own truck in my own shop then billed myself $8,000 minus the 100% discount. LOL.

I just got a quote to have some work done on my car and the guy spent the whole time warning me about how expensive it was going to be. He mentioned that the standard rate to paint the whole car is $8k. This is at a European specialty place that does insurance work on Bentleys and Rolls Royce and such, so I knew it wasn't going to be cheap, but the car is a keeper so I want it done right.

So the car was keyed down the driver's side on the door and rear quarter (which is why I'm having it painted), and while it was there I wanted them to spray the hood and both front fenders to fix rock chips.

$4600. I'm considering talking to my insurance company about fixing the vandalism and paying for the rest out of pocket.

I'd love to have some paint work done on my 4Runner, but I know it will cost a fortune to get it done right, and the red fades pretty badly so it's basically either all or nothing if you want it to match.

Kinda sounds a bit like a snooty joint where they know they can quote an obscene amount and the Bentley owner's will feel better about themselves if they pay a lot for it-- something that others cannot afford. I'd take it to a decent dealer-recommended or user-recommended joint and the price will probably come down about 50%...for the same job. Just my opinion, though. I used to have a boss that was worth millions and millions and he used to tell me that he preferred to go to places that the common guy couldn't afford. It made him feel special. Seriously. Warped sense of being. Just sayin'.

My guy I knew that did some awesome work out of his garage gave me a quote on my bronco back in the day. He told me $5k before even seeing the truck. Then issues with body would add on to that. $5k covered the paint, labor of tear down(motor and interior), prep and so on. Anything with body issues would be more. All his cars came out looking like glass, better than factory and he would only do a perfect job so he said he cant just do the body if its got dents. This guy didnt do bentleys and rolls. So its not crazy for quotes like that.

That is the dealer recommended shop. The car is a BMW. It's also a Five Star USAA facility (my insurance) and is rated very highly.

I'm going to shop it around for sure, but painting a car right is a lot of labor. On the door for example, the whole window has to come out, because the trim along the top of the door is part of the track. I've replaced it once myself and it's a PITA. For the front fenders the headlights and inner fender liners have to come out, and that means the whole front bumper cover has to come off.

I'm sure there are places that will do it for less money, but I'm not sure they'll do it at the same level of quality. I'm considering stripping all the parts off myself, and just having them prep and spray it to save some money.

Nice! I've had some amazing paint jobs on my old BMW, Camaro, and an old '77 Chevy Cheyenne. I guess I got lucky. I think the most I ever paid was 3k and that was on a Fiero GT. LOL! I was not looking for show quality-- just a gloss and no runs. I took off most parts myself, but that's about it.

Rock on, y'all!
 
Pssh... who cares that when you open a door or the engine bay and there's a different color inside? Or you can still see that red color coming out from under the trim and clashing with your new blue? I heard those MAACO paint jobs last like 30 years yo!
 
Ha, you laugh about MAACO, but that's who painted my new hood and fender. Single stage with 3yr warranty, $250 out the door. I took the parts in primed (bought them that way) left my truck, and he color matched from a clean spot on my rear hatch.

Both pieces came out great, match with existing paint.

 
I just recently paid 850.00 for paint and no its not perfect, but it looks hellava lot better than it did. I can't image spending more money on paint then my truck is worth knowing Ill be pin-stripping it anyways! For the record I had major oxidation, so this paint job makes the truck look 100x's better than it did prior.

I think if you're just painting parts or keeping it the same color then MAACO would work just fine, since it would be a simple job of just painting part, putting it on rig. And I guess with white you don't really have to worry about oxidation!

I'd pay the 800-1000 for a MAACO paintjob on my 4Runner every four to six years vs 8k once and not have a clue what's to come in the next year or two. Am I going to be totaled in an accident? Decide to sell or upgrade? Lost in a flood here in Houston? Nope. Not spending that. MAACO, I've always heard, does a great job of just repainting the same colour on the same colour after fixing chips, etc. Again, just opinion.

That's what I get for wanting a black truck, and not waiting to get RatorLiner or MonstaLiner. *Shrug*


Either way, it's coming off, and I will be doing a WWII Style paint job. Kinda like the Tomahauk.

Which is a Heep, but a pretty nice, twin turbo Heep. Yes. The barrels spin........

I WILL NOT be hand doing the rivets. Acutually air brushing them in.
