Optima has gone down the tube lately. I've owned red and yellow tops. My experience was mediocre with a terrible warranty.
Now I am running a heavy duty 780 CCA interstate bought from Costco for $90 and it came with a 5 year warranty.
And here is the kicker ..... Costco does not check the battery before returning it. You want to return it after 2 years because it isn't quite up to snuff anymore then just bring the battery into the store and they will give you a 100% cash refund even after 18 months.

The Toyota parts counter told me all domestic Toyota Batteries, aka any Toyota True Start replacement battery bought from a dealer are manufactured by Interstate Batteries. Of course, the batteries that come installed in vehicles made in Japan are built by Panasonic.

I haven't heard anything good about Optima in quite some time. I think the good reputation they had is hanging by a thread, but will be soon forgotten by all.
The "RC" rating is pretty important when buying a battery for guys doing off-road or overland adventures. It's the "Reserve Capacity"- which basically means the average run time without being charged(in minutes). Running the stereo, work/camp lights, compressor, etc all benefit from a higher RC rating.
My buddy just got a good battery from Batteries Plus for his crawler, and it has an RC rating of 130. I looked at Costco's Interstate, and I think the RC was 90 for the group that is a direct swap with ours- I didn't remember the group number- like 24/31 etc.
I will probably get the Interstate when I am ready for a new batter(her soon), but I do wish it had a higher Reservation Capacity.

No more Optimas for me. I'm on the second a blue marine one in a 2000 Tundra, should've learned my lesson after the replacing the first one, next battery will be something I can easily purchase and replace locally like Pep Boys or Costco and have a battery tender wired to it since this truck is rarely driven.
In the 4Runner I'm running an Exide from Home Depot, forgot the exact specs but it was higher in all categories versus the local store brands (Pep Boys,Autozone,Advanced Auto) and a longer warranty.

I use a Motomaster Eliminator AGM battery from Canadian Tire. It's basically a rebranded Exide Edge for $150CDN when it goes on sale. I like it because it has a 5 year replacement warranty. No matter where you are in Canada, you're not far from a Canadian Tire. So if it craps the bed, a free replacement will be easily had.
I've also horribly abused it with my truck fridge and it's shown no signs of wear.

I've got the die hard platinum that they are no longer making.... I must be one of the few people that have not been impressed with this battery and I am looking for a new one also(dead after a few days off the charger, and checked parasite draw. Barely holds 12v after shut down)... My electrical usage is enough that I have considered a dual battery set up, but I am leaning towards a group 31m AGM battery. Anyone have experience with interstates agm's?

So what battery is ideal for off road. I have a duralast and we'll it spills acid when off camber
I was told the optima yellow tops are ideal because they don't carry acid, but a gel substance.

+1 on Costco! Mine died only 2 weeks before the full replacement period was up. I took it in and they let me get a brand new battery, no questions asked. They do not check it at all, the return desk just put it on a shelf and I took the receipt around to the tire center and picked up my NEW battery!

It's still acid. Just absorbed into the matted plates. Hence AGM (absorbed glass mat) totally different from a real Gell Cell battery.

Yep same here! Totally satisfied with my Costco Interstate battery. Was like $91 out the door IIRC.
Plus Costcos are everywhere and as you mentioned — replacements are not a hassle.

That size battery is considered a commercial battery. And out preform a normal battery because of its size. But a flooded battery of the same size always has a higher amp hour rating than a AGM of the same size.
