What are you thoughts on the Tacoma TRD Pro?

I'm happy to report that my '11 4Runner has 125k on it and running like new. We are keeping her and hoping she will reach 300k some day.

In the mean time we are adding a second vehicle to our household and my first choice is the '17 Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro in cement color. I really wanted the quicksand, but TRD Pro doesn't come in that flavor for the 17models. The cement color is growing on me though.

What are your thoughts on the Tacoma? The TRD Pro model in general? Any major issues about this platform? Do you think I'll like it coming from a 2011 sr5 Toyota 4Runner? (Still keeping the 4Runner).

I can't offer any reliability or personal experiences, but I think the new Tacoma looks really good inside and out. If I had the need or opportunity to add a second vehicle, the new Tacoma would be high on the list. In regards to the quicksand; that color is AWESOME. I believe you are able to get that color in a 4x4 off-road version of the Tacoma, I understand it's not the Pro, but the 4x4 off-road iteration of the Tacoma looks fantastic.

This is my opinion, so please feel free to disagree. I have seen a Cement TRDP Tacoma, the color is really nice, but I did not think it suited the truck well. The truck looked really busy; I feel that way about all the TRDP colors on the Tacoma, with the exception of the white. I have noticed the white seems to complement the TRDP dress up really well on the Tacoma.

Let us know if you get one. I'm sure the truck will be incredible and just as reliable as the older versions have proven to be.

Suggest you spend time on the TACOMAWORLD forum. I hear and read a lot of dissatisfaction with the new Taco. I have read several posts in the 5th Gen forum of owners abandoning them for 4Runners.

Poor build quality, poor fit and finish. Horrible trans issues. Haven't we learned yet, to not by the first few years of a new model as the continue to work out the kinks. There is a reason why Toyota builds a vehicle and manufactures it for a decade at a time, because they are tried and true. This new engine constantly hunting for gears and the sloppy transmission is not being well received by the enthusiast. Would the general public know the difference probably not, but these 3rd gens are getting sold quickly by people that actually want to go off the beaten path in their new truck.

I'd get another 4Runner. The 17 4Runner looks different than the 11 4Runner you already have so they're not exactly the same and you can get the 4Runner in cement.

One thing to keep in mind is on a forum you're going to see a lot of complaints and what not. 99.99% of people aren't on a forum for their car. We are a strange group of people... That said there do seem to be quite a few quality issues with the new Tacoma which is disappointing. I'd give it a couple more years for everything to get worked out and see how they look then. If there are still issues pass, or they've all been worked out and it will be solid like previous generations.

They ZR2 blows the Taco away.
My 2000 Trooper is showing its age, and a ZR2 is the likely replacement.
I've checked out the Tacos and there are waaay to many ongoing problems.

I'm a hardcore Toyota fan due to my current family car: a '11 4Runner: 125k and zero issues.
After doing some research on the Tacoma on tacomaworld and Tacoma Facebook forums it's easy to see that it has 5 tsbs and MANY SERIOUS issues like, driveline rattle, diff leaking, very squaeaky leaf springs, and more. Owners are reporting waiting for over a month on dealers to fix issues. Dealers are giving them Toyota Camry rentals while their very expensive 45k trucks are sitting at the lots collecting dust. In some cases they are waiting on answer from corporate. It's a shame because I REaLLY wanted the TRD Pro version which is close to 45k. For this kind of money I expect a completely flawless truck of this size. I am SO disappointed right now. I really don't want to go the domestic route, and the Tundra just drinks too much gas to be justifiable, I just don't need a full size truck. Also not a fan of Nissan (frontier and Nissan in general is garbage imo).
Such a shame. Maybe I'll wait for the 2018 to come out and see if the issues get resolved. Seems to me like the latest years of the 2nd gen are tanks. Why did Toyota ruin a good thing?

It's funny when I posed this question on Tacoma enthusiast forums, I got a lot of responses to get a newer 4Runner and to avoid the taco. Such a shame. Shame on Toyota. If Toyota is listening, your going in the wrong direction. This #1 reseller and truck will soon be the laughing stock in the truck world if you don't fix this :/

The first couple years of a new or updated vehicle can be rough. I've sat in a few new Colorados and I though the fit and finish and build quality was far below the Tacoma and especially the 4runner.

I agree. Find a late second gen with low miles if you're dead set on the Taco. The 1GR is one of the best engines Toyota ever produced and is far better suited for day to day light truck use.

I was drawn like a moth to a flame over that Cement color, I absolutely loved it when I saw it. Initially, I also looked into the TRDP Taco but for the same money I brought home a TRDP Tundra in Cement. I know you said you didn't want a full size but for the same money you can get the cement color, 5.7 V8, really a overall proven platform.

To be fair, 3 of my co-workers have 2016 Tacoma double cab 4x4s and love them. They haven't had any trouble other than a stay elk running out in front of one of them, and he still managed to drive it home. I also do a lot of reading on TW and some of it is just whining about little things. I also wonder how many trucks, or even just vehicles in general, some of the posters over there have had. My advice is to just go drive one in person for yourself.

While the ZR2 looks to be pretty promising, that doesn't mean there won't be some issues here and there with it as well. One of my other co-workers has a Z71 Colorado with the duramax. I know it's had its own fair share of real problems. Every mfg makes their lemons, some more than others.

My neighbor upgraded from a 3rd Gen 4Runner SR5 4x4 to nice looking TRD Pro Quicksand Tacoma a couple of months ago. It's already lifted with some decent looking wheels. Front and rear bumper replaced with steel ones and with a winch. He must have not heard of all the bad things going on with it or he must have gotten for a steal.

If I was him and knew about those issues, I would have kept the 3rd Gen. It was was stock, very clean and well kept. Hell, if I knew he was getting rid of his 3rd Gen, I would have taken it off his hands.

Not all of them. Some are made in San Antonio mixed in with the Tundra and the rest are made in Baja Mexico. Also, Toyota was or is supposed to ramp up production of the Taco and those will be made in Mexico. I'm guessing those with the majority of issues are made in Mexico. It seems to me that man power may be cheap down there but the product is usually crappy. Didn't Gateway computers move down there and that was the beginning of their fall?
