Nikon D3000

Just starting out and read some reviews about the D3000 as an entry level (relatively inexpensive) DSLR, so I bought it and I've been pretty happy with it for the few months I've had it. Just wondering if anyone knows of any good sites with tips and good information for a beginner? It's difficult going in not having taken a photography class since HS (that didn't teach me much) and trying to take good pictures.

Pick up the book set I mentioned previously in this thread. It will help you out a lot.

Scott Kelby is a well known photographer, teacher & author. I love how he explains it easy w/o technical lingo which makes you want to read more & he has a comical twist when explaining.

Personally I like that my D300 can shoot at 8fps (frames per second). Great for wildlife photography.

The D90 is still a current model, so nothing yet. You're correct, the D90 does have the AF motor in the body. On another deals forum, there was mention that rumors are circulating a D7000 will be its replacement (makes sense, since the D100 moniker has been used, unless they go with something weak like "D90s" or "D90x"), but some are saying the D7000 won't have the AF motor and others say it will. So far the D3000 and D5000 do not have the AF motor. Time will tell.

What's sweet about the D300s, and I'm pretty sure the D300 would be the same, is the addition of a battery grip bumps up the FPS. The battery grip doesn't increase FPS on the D90.

My only gripe with Nikon is I wish they get into the MP race with Canon. (The D3x is the only Nikon D-SLR over 12MP.) But I have no plans in jumping ship. Waiting for that Nikon that will have 15MP+ (not interested in a "pro" camera). And the ability to shoot 1080p video through Nikkor glass, maybe the D700 replacement will have it? :party:

Yeah, it does on the D300 as well. I get 6fps normally, and I get 8fps with the grip. And as an added bonus, the grip makes it look sexy. The D90 grips are wimpy!!

You should read up on MP. You would be surprised how much it does not matter. :) The MP race is a marketing ploy for uneducated/novice photographers. Unless you are blowing up your pictures into giant posters, billboards, or cropping them down 15 times their normal size, you won't notice a difference.

i have a nikon d5000,

ive had it since june and im really enjoying it alot! its been a fun camera, its my first dslr and it handles everything id like it to do so far, its quite a step up from my old yashica and minolta slr that ive used in the past. so far ive picked up the nikkor 18-135mm and most recently the 50 1.4 and the sb-600 which has been so awesome to use!!

in the future i have my eyes set on the D700 but that wont be until i can justify the jump and need the full size sensor
 
CANON is the BEST! This is just an example, definitely not it's best

I've gone through a couple of different point and shoots....my deployment camera is a sony cybershot....only problem i have with it is it doesnt give me enough zoom for certain shots. other than that its great because it has a video function built in, and its simple to use.

my nice DLSR is a canon rebel xsi. I debated over nikon or canon and went with the canon on a good friends advice. i'm still in the beginning stages, and even after having it a year i havent figured out all the cool functions, but its slowly coming. It does shoot nice pictures, and I'm quite pleased with it, and i doubt that I will upgrade to a different camera anytime soon, unless for some reason this craps the pot.

and i actually got a pretty good deal on it through amazon...20% off and free shipping.....plus i got it in silver, not black, which was what i wanted.

my only concern is i'm not sure how to go lens shopping....same with filters.
 
When I was in high school I took photography I shoot with a Canon. I dont know what it was but it was fun in the full manual mode. right now I just use my G1 phone.

I'm getting back into it so I will be purchasing the new Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8 VR2 and the Nikon 24-70mm f/2.8 in the next month or two. Tomorrow I have a Nikon 35mm f/1.8 coming via UPS.

My Nikon 12-24 f/4 does a great job so that will be staying until I get a FX (full frame) body. If Nikon hints at replacing the D700 in the next year I will get it's replacement. Otherwise I will get a D700 and 14-24 f/2.8 before 2010 is up. Then I will have the complete holy trinity.

I am not going to say that a Nikon is not a good camera, its a great camera. But I have to stick with Canon; and congrats, that's going to be a lot of fun!

Lens wise Canon's are the best but really expensive, tokina and sigma are also pretty good lenses; I can't remember if Canon's 10-22 Wide Angle lens fits your camera but that would be a great investment, or you could go with the Sigma 10-24 and I think Tokina's is the 10-20 or something
