What changes with Bilstein 5100's?

Still learning as I am coming from sports cars

What noticeable changes do 5100's make?

How will they affect ride quality on the pavement? Will I feel every little bump because its stiffer or will it handle every bump better etc?

Thanks for the help...

Why are you asking?

Because some of us have wives who will refuse to ride in a lifted truck if the ride is bone shattering.

I had the stock suspension, OME, and 5100s (the OME rusted to hell in Colorado).

The 5100s are stiffer and the truck doesn't pitch and nosedive, but they also do a better job of soaking the bumps.

Because I want to know exactly what I am doing to the truck before I do it

Agreed! That's exactly what I was going for with our lift, and the wife loves it. It's a little stiffer, but smooth at the same time. Soaks up bumps better, and rides down the highway nicely. Oh and helps with nose dive like Land Cruiser said. Do a search, you will see lots of good reviews about them.

Agreed with Lexus. I don't have Bilsteins per se, but the Toytec is a custom valved 5100. It soaks up the bumps great and considering my shocks were completely shot. They've really made the truck feel grounded and much flatter in corners. I live in a place with about 10 speed bumps to my house. I don't go flying over them but when I do go over it's not none jarring or bounce the stuff in my drawer around which I would hear and is my gauge of stiffness. Hope that helps. Also don't go super stiff on the springs. I went from 550lb stock to 600lb. That really made things work well but not overly stiff.

Mine is the 5100s as part of the Toytec Ultimate lift.

Not sure if there's a world of difference between these in the kit and getting them alone.

Get 'em! You won't regret it. I just have them in the front, I am thinking about getting them in the rear now as well. For all the reasons above. I have my fronts set at 2.5" to level out the rake.

If I ever had a do over. Gunmetal wheels on nautical blue metallic is the way I would want it. That blue is my favorite color, but couldn't justify a financial hit in trading for a paint color lol. Nice truck man. I know :offtopic:

Although I haven't changed the suspension on my 5th gen yet, the 5100s did exactly what Lexusbstrdchild described on my 4th gen. Stiffer yet still smooth. More control in the corners and way less nose dive. I will add, the 5100s were very stiff for the first 250-400 miles, then they seemed to settle in to a very nice ride.

I asked that question because obviously the OP has heard of the shock somewhere, read something about it or otherwise gleaned some information about it. Why else would he ask?

There are 5,280 threads in the 5th gen section on this subject. There are 100,000's of them generally on the internet. I was just trying to narrow it down and then post a link to a thread where that information was.

Or maybe here

Or how about here

Is it better for answers and comments to just be regurgitated ad nauseam or to post a specific link to directly answer the specific concern of the OP? Hope this helps OP or maybe instead I could just say "They are better" or "Because some of us have wives that will refuse to ride in a lifted truck" or something helpful like that.

I have the 4 shock set on stock springs. Fronts are set at 1.75" lift, and so far the rear is factory height. The 5100's provide a minor stiffening over the factory shocks in normal on road driving. I did not notice any major change in ride quality. They do seem to stiffen up some over abrupt bumps as speed increases. This is based on my 56 yr old calibrated butt, and not on available data. I believe they use some form of variable valving that increases compression at higher shaft velocities, but I have no documented proof of this. I did not notice any major change in ride quality around town. I did see a noticeable change in the amount of nose dive under moderate to hard braking but it did not completely remove it. My Trail is a basic model. No KDSS or Premium features.

That said I have no problem sailing it off onto any highway onramp as fast or faster than 90% of the general driving public without having any reservation about how well it will handle the curves. I'm a sporty driver and enjoy a nice curve, but I also understand it is NOT a Corvette. I didn't buy it with that expectation and am very pleased at how well it does handle given its intended design purpose.

One LARGE selling point as far as I am concerned is that Toyota TRD engineers work directly with Bilstein engineers in developing the shocks they sell as their TRD brand. To the best of my knowledge all TRD Off Road branded shocks are made by Bilstein and based on the 5100 design. That's a good enough endorsement for me.

Here are some customer reviews from a sales website.

Geez, that read like a cheap porn novel. :)
