What color are my so-called "large painted overfenders"?

2000 Toyota 4Runner SR-5 3.4L V6 4WD AT with a paint code 3K4 on the door sticker.

So, my paint code is 3K4 (Sunfire Red Pearl), and this truck has "JZ LARGE PAINTED OVERFENDER" from the factory, and "R1 COLOR-KEYED RUNNING BOARDS" installed at port.

According to Import Archive, the only Sunfire Red two-tone options were:

1. Sunfire Red / Topaz Metallic (1999)
2. Sunfire Red / Thunder Cloud (2001-2002)
3. Sunfire Red / Sunfire Red (2002)

This truck is a 2000. So there's no two-tone options listed on any website I've seen, but my overfenders look to me like they're Topaz Metallic.

Not sure how to verify since there's no color code anywhere for this that I can find. The door sticker just shows 3K4 which is just Sunfire Red Pearl.

Any clues?

That is odd - I don't see the Sunfire Red Pearl code listed with the 2 tone scheme. It does look quite similar to the Topaz Metallic I have on my Jade LTD cladding and flares, but do not go by that - could also be Thundercloud as mentioned.......next?

On the other hand, your build date of 04/00 precedes the TCloud of 2001, so I'm leaning towards Topaz as well.

I am researching this myself now, for a fender replace/ repaint of my car this summer....thats when I came across this chart.

I wonder if your flares were added later and painted later.....after production...going by the chart and your color code , it did not have flares I think.
The reason I say this is your color code is one color

However if you look at cars that are built with flares, they list the flare color in the paint code, even if same color.....
example ...mine has flares.. color code is KF9.....its listed as thunder cloud/thunder cloud
if it had not had flares it would have been 1D2 and just thunder cloud


yours...3k4 is sunfire red
if it had left the factory as sunfire red with topaz flares it would be color code k89 for sunfire red/topaz

of course this all assumes the below chart and info are correct

Mine looks just like yours, the situations where it didn't seem to make any sense, I was talking with the guy on Etsy who 3D printed mud flaps and he acted like this color combination didn't exist so he only made them in Black in this size

Here are a bunch of different angles and lighting.

Sometimes it looks like Thundercloud, sometimes Topaz.

I don't have any reference point other than photos online, which makes it hard. There are a few 4Runners near me, I may end up just knocking on doors and asking people what color they have and if I can compare in-person haha.

EDIT: wow seeing these photos all next to each other, the paint REALLY changes based on lighting and how recently it was washed...

Right based on production date and color code, it should not have large painted overfenders, but when I put my VIN into the Toyota owners website, it says "JZ LARGE PAINTED OVERFENDER" from the Factory.

Exactly right. Assuming this info is correct. It does match all the other sites I've found with the color info.

I think the thing that's really throwing me off is that fact that the Toyota owners website says the large painted overfenders were from the factory. I'd be less confused if the dealer added these.

The large overfenders (flares) require square holes in the fenders (front and rear) that aren't there on the small and non-flare trucks... they basically have to be a factory option.

Looks like you had Limited running boards on there when you got it too (the end caps look like the Limited end caps) - did they match in color - that might be a clue. Hard to tell from the photo.

Check out Formidable's Thundercloud build shots. He has a slew of amazing shots, and to my untrained eye, his TCloud paint appears to be a tad less 'warm and earthy' than your flares and more like my Topaz (a few crappy pics in my Photos). Again, just an opinion. I looked at your VIN too, and there doesn't seem to be any hard data there.

These are weird, but 100% OEM. 2000 is the weird intro year for this too, because they didn't document the paint codes for this option very well. In 2001 they offered these flares but were more diligent in documenting the colors. Very odd because selecting this option would require your vehicle to start manufacturing on a different assembly line.

My guess would be Topaz, just by comparing it to the Sunfire red/Topaz combo on the Limiteds. Thundercloud would not have that gold tint.

Update: they are definitely Topaz Metallic.

I was able to compare side by side with a White / Thundercloud limited near my house.
