It just so happens I was getting ready to do a write up for you guys and dispel all the F'in myths about the 3rd gen Tacoma. I have put 4K miles on it in the first month (whew) and did everything in it except hard core off road. I want to be detailed and give you guys all the pros and cons. Maybe I should do a SWOT analysis lol (and 100 internet points to whoever knows what a SWOT analysis is). Anyway, look for a 5th Gen 4Runner versus a 3rd Gen Tacoma - what should I buy and why should I buy it - kind of article.

Anyway, I have taken a vacation from here. I did answer all the pm's (hoped it helped you guys). I am going to come back on a limited basis. I am still a mod so I will try to keep it copacetic in this forum. I WILL NOT be posting much. I will not get into the BS like I used to do, but I will moderate some if needed.

So there you go. Sabbatical ended.

How do you feel about the power in comparison to your 5th gen? I was 99.9% set on a new Tacoma until I drove one and it just felt like a dog. While I understand the power numbers are similar to 4Runner, the power band feels better to me down low on the 4Runner. I haven't looked at any charts to back up this feeling, but that was my input based on some test drives.

In hindsight, I was also driving a 6.7 F250 with 400 hp and 800 lb torque, (stock numbers) at the time, so obviously that didn't help.

Either way, that was my biggest gripe. Maybe it would have changed with some more time behind the wheel.

I, also, was set on a new Tacoma until I test drove and it felt like a dog...I'm happy I passed on it and bought my turd pro.

Enjoy! My 2017 Tacoma lasted 4 months before I had to get rid of it. Wasn't a good fit (literally) for any type of long term relationship.

Seems like everyone on the tacoma forums has a 4runner taco combo yet for some odd reason i feel out of place on this forum. Personally I have needs for both.

The leg room, interior comfort, cargo security, make it great for long hauls and my pack rat wifes daily.

While my tacoma works great for work with the bed. Also my frequent trips to lowes! however they are getting more frequent with larger loads with my side buisness kinda sorta taking off, so i broke down and bought a trailer instead of taking a loan out for a full size.

The off road capabilities are basically identical in stock form IMHO but im more willing to take the taco deeper into the bush... cause its paid for...

But i didnt mean to highjack the thread, just excited for a good review and someone elses opinion

At least it's a 6spd manual, I think that would help match the awkward powerband of the engine a bit more; though I recall a lot of Tacoma guys mentioning that Toyota's gearing for the 6spd manual is a bit weird in regards to ratios. The ones I have driven a good length of time did seem slightly "off" but not horrible.

Great...the best opportunity we'd have to ride together and I'll be almost as far away as possible and still in the country (Alaska). I'll find a way to get you that beer sooner or later lol.

Funny. Since 2010 I've read countless threads with the very same complaint about the 4R. SMH.

And I never thought I'd read this: "the power band feels better to me down low on the 4Runner".

Even though I'll never even test drive a Taco, interested to hear Greg's remarks.

Yeah the 4Runner is a total dog as well, but oddly the Tacoma almost had what I could only describe as a "turbo lag" feeling down low. Mash the pedal and like nothing for a few moments. The only different is when you do get power even then it feels like a 4runner, not some turbo charged beast lol. If that makes sense.

Again, just my experience.

I'm surprised he bought a Tacoma. I wanted to like it but 5 minutes into the drive I knew I would not enjoy the vehicle long term. Maybe a manual trans would change that a bit, but the 4runner hands down is the better vehicle. That's what I ended up buying. Toyota has gotta fix the mess.

I know you aren't leaving completely, but a lot of your posts about T4Rs were very helpful to me just before buying a 5th gen and continuing after. Will miss your more involved presence.

Damn, in Chicago working until the 5th. Would have bought you a case of beer AND dinner for all the knowledge I've gained on your behalf. Be careful riding in the heat down there. I dont ride but always eat a couple of bananas for the potassium to keep the cramps away during any physical activity. Florida 4runners are camping at one of the springs the 21st thru the 23rd if you want to hold over for a couple weeks lol. Good luck w the Taco and thanks very much Greg!

Wow.. that's disappointing to hear. The looks have kind of grown on me with the 3rd gen but outside of reliability (which hasn't been great) there was no point in me getting the Tacoma vs other trucks .
