What Did You Do To Your 3rd Gen Today?

My wife needed new tires, so it was the perfect time to upgrade to 17's and get a set of RockStar II's. She has the dreaded brake shimmy, so I went to pick up the parts for the TBU on Friday. On the way back I had a misfire in cylinder 3. So Friday I learned how to troubleshoot a misfire, and replace a fuel injector without having gas spray everywhere. It took a few tries. I finally got around to the TBU yesterday and the car is stopping like a dream. Thanks for all the how to's, I couldn't have done any of this without them!

Started hearing and feeling a "thunk/clunk" sound from the rear end a couple weeks ago. I recognized the sound as the slip yoke sticking after hard braking. Thought it was odd though since I had just greased all the u-joints and rear slip yoke just 4000 miles ago during the last oil change. Seems like it should have lasted a little longer.

Anyways, got in there and using Gamefreakgc's trick of sticking a little jewelers screwdriver into the zerk nipple —I found there was no grease under pressure at all. Last time I greased it, I greased it until the driveshaft started to extend.

Started pumping and managed to get 47 pumps in before the driveshaft moved again. I then let some grease back out the zerk with the jewelers screwdriver.

I'm not sure where all the grease went in just 4 thousand miles, but I can say that the clunking noise is gone again and there are less vibrations at 70mph.

I wonder if the higher temperatures (106 the other day) have thinned out the grease and it just kinda gets used up quicker. I didn't see any sign of it being spun out all over the place, so who knows.

Oh well, just par for the course I guess when you drive a nearly 20 year old 4wd with 375,000 miles on it. Grease is cheap...

cleaned my truck after 3 days of " getting lost in the woods"
however.....I guess I shook a few things loose
time for lbj's and steering rack mounts...original lbjs ( 150+k) and I can see the rack move
everything else "felt" good on inspection

Switched out the front lift spacers and rear LC coils for the Tundra/906 coils on Bilstein 5100's. Love the ride and drop in rake!

Battery light has been turning on and off the last few days. DMM confirmed hat the alternator isn't charging. Picked up a brush assembly from the dealership and replaced today. No more battery light! The old brushes were definitely on borrowed time.

My vote: don't change the wheels. I really like the contrast with the rest of what you've got going.

Thanks and I agree. The grey from the Trail rims didn't match the grey perfectly from the base model bumpers so I was considering painting the bumpers to keep the contrast between the rims and the rest of the truck. I would never paint the rims, love 'em too much.

Over the weekend I figured out just how far off my speedometer/odometer are by comparing traveled distance (measured via mile markers) to what the trip computer said I had traveled.

Every 14 miles of freeway, my trip computer showed 13. At 7 miles I was at 6.5 on the computer...

Using that information I calculated mileage on a few tanks of gas and am MUCH happier about my fuel economy than in the past.

17.5mpg from Seattle to Salem. (Freeway at 70-75mph)

17.2mpg from Salem to Sisters (up Santiam Pass, then about 10 miles of forest service roads)

18.62mpg from Sisters to Salem (down Santiam Pass)

17.2mpg from Salem to Seattle (Freeway at 70mph)

Added a switch to control the power antenna since my HU has it always up when it is on.

I also started my rear axle seal rebuild!

Where did you pick up the aux tank? I've been thinking of doing this mod for some time.

Just hit a Pick-a-part and compared tank sizes. The focus was the most square that fit my depth requirements.

I love having it and it works great. Still have to wire up the fuel gauge to it and it is a PITA to fill.
