:crybaby:

Dang man. That sucks! :moping:

I fortunately put in my Double Din that I had laying around that sounds way better than factory.

I also washed my truck and she's looking clean! Don't worry, I am about to paint my wheels black.

One question. Do my tires look too small for that lift? or what do you think? I have my urges when I want to bump up to a 285/75 or even a 295/75 and do a 1inch body lift. But then I know my gas mileage will take a dump. I think 265's will be perfect for the mountains. My current tires are 265/75/16 Toyo AT2 LT pretty much brand new less than 500 miles.

Diagnosed a bad headgasket issue and it's gotten to where the truck is running a bit rough and am looking into a low mileage engine replacement.

It does suck since I've taken very good care of this truck since I bought it 12 years ago but age and just replaced the original radiator and exhaust since it is at almost 188k miles and figured I took care of possible future problems but can't predict a head gasket going bad.

Considering you like the look of the 5th gen are you getting rid of the present 3rd gen and going new?

Like others have done, if the bottom end is fine, then just buy some remanned heads along with other supplies and fix it.

Yes, but that's ok! I have 265/75 duratracs and I've literally never had an issue getting up moderate off road obstacles here in CO. Its a personal choice though, and some would rather sacrifice the rpms and mpgs for a bigger tire. I didn't want to make it harder on my truck to get up mountain passes at highway speeds since it already seems to struggle a little.

I kinda went the same route, except I put on 285/70r16 Nitto Trail Grapplers, they are 32x11.5 vs 32x10.5 the width makes up for the smallness, the good thing is I only have a 2inch lift and it's perfect, Ill have to take a pic sometime. I too was afraid of the lift/wheel size and IMO I think it's perfect for what I have...

that 02 is very nice ;)

beautiful runner bro. looking back sometimes i wish i went with a 265 tire. i have 285s now and its so sluggish with the 4.10s. my mpgs went down to 12s. but man, everytime i park and i look back at it i think "damn, thats a badass *****" lol so when im at the gas pump or trying to merge onto the freeway i wish i stuck with a smaller tire. everyother time im glad i went bigger. gears will solve all of this in like 6 months lol i dont think i helped whatsoever, sorry

Still paying off my wife's car and a 5th gen is still a ways off and I actually really like my 3rd gen.

My mechanic recommended a low mileage replacement since the labor for a HG was close to the same and with 188k on the bottom end and that cylinder being "washed" for a possible extended time he said there could be problems sooner than later.
He sourced me a 3.4 from Cali with 61,000 miles on it for $1600 shipped and considering the money I just sunk into it plus new Duratracs spending another $3k or so made the most sense instead of buying a questionable used truck.

You need a build thread with more pictures and details, and pictures of those details... Haha

Oh yeah, I'll definitely start one as soon as I actually have it in my possession! Luckily my parents are retired and have nothing to do so they're going to drive it down to San Diego for me and spend a couple days with us while they're here. So that really works out. I'll have it on Tuesday!! ...never been so happy for the weekend to be done with haha.

Awesome man! I like to hear from someone that's going to be near where I am moving to. How does your 4runner do in snow? I want to rust free my undercarriage for the winter, what do I need to do? How does your truck do on Snowboarding and ski trips in the mountains? :car:
rudogg760 Thanks man, I know what the bigger tires look like, but for right now I think 265s fit the bill. I got the tire's before the lift which I feel was a mistake lol, cause then I would've definitely went with a 1" body lift and 285's. But I had an old 1999 4runner with 295's and I DEFINITELY needed gears because I couldn't pass anyone on the freeway. post a pic of your truck man!

Here's the most recent. Me taking the side steps off made a big improvement lol before I got the 285s I was actually thinking of going 35s. But I did a test for with a 35 and knew damn well I wouldn't be able to do it lol

Dude that is one clean truck! I love those big tires. :target:

Now I am seriously thinking of selling my brand new Toyo's (if anyone wants to buy them I'll sell all 4 for 500$) and getting some bigger tires.

What do you have equipped to put the spare on the back?

Next thing I am thinking of doing is the Andymod and the Rola Roof rack.

Let me know!

Saw the tire carrier in my way home from work today. Looks good!

Did you see the Big Bear trail run this Saturday in the SoCal section?

No I haven't. I haven't really taken it outside of the valley yet. Farthest I've gone is ocotillo wells. I had anxiety really bad for a long time to where I didn't go out to the desert. I'm barley getting my feet wet going out little by little. I want to go to king of hammers :-D

It wasn't a simple plug and play mod by any means. Definitely as in all mods it's at your own risk. Kinda of a spendy part to replace...okay, CMA is over- here's what I've got...

I am still working on getting the fuel gauge needle juuuuust right. Doesn't help that I have to wait between low fuel light to fill-up. Using the photo of the original fuel needle position did not work. The other needles were pretty easy. I did have to break one of the old needles apart to get it off (they generally pull straight off) but had picked up some replacements from broken clusters at the boneyard for spares. Ended up using the coolant temp and fuel gauge needles out of a newer 3rd gen because I like the style better.

Basically I pulled the front of the cluster apart (clips in, easy to do), pulled the needles off, unscrewed tiny screws to remove the faces, cut gels to fit behind the dial faces with cut-outs for the parts I didn't want colored, put it all back together.

I also removed the orange paint from the needles and re-colored them. Just the bottom edges so the light would still shine through them.

The green bulb condoms on the original cluster bulbs come right off. It all works just as it did before but not as bright because of the light having to shine through the gels. Still dimmable.

There are way easier ways to color your cluster!

The climate control on the 96, on the other hand, was simple to color to match.
The key light has a green bulb condom too. I removed that and will later figure out a blue bulb condom or configure a matching gel.

Getting the cluster out of the truck post 1854 (from a different mod, but the instructions to remove the cluster are here)

During the day it's pretty Clark Kent:

I thought about coloring the back of the gauge faces with ink but was afraid there would be a quick color fade issue. Would also have to source another gauge face to make sure I got the color right first. Still think fading would be a big issue with that.

BRO. I love that tire carrier, its cheap too.

I live in Texas and wont be able to make the meet? I would have to leave tonight to go up there. I actually might think about it.

:dancin:

Question about the tire carrier though. Does it interfere with opening the hatch? Or does it lay down so you can open it.
