What Did You Do To Your 3rd Gen Today?

Yesterday and today I began cleaning up/wire wheeling the under carriage of the rig. Started at the back and made it to the front of the rear lower control arm mounts on the frame.
Wire wheeled scraped and brushed any loose paint rust dirt debris off of it, then 2-3 coats of self etching primer. Then 2-3 coats of rubberized undercoating. Both rustoleum brand. Also while I had the back wheels off I cleaned up the brake drums and painted those with high heat engine block paint(also rustoleum) in the gloss black flavor. I'll get some pics up soon but don't have alot, didn't have my camera with me, and i didn't have much time to spare.

Finished replacing my clutch. It was one heck of a project and took me two full weekends in a row along with a Tuesday night. That's what happens to me every time I do a major repair for the first time.

Flushed the PS pump, PITA. Word to the wise, do your self a favor and get a 3/8" hose mender fitting and some 3/8" ID clear hose for this, 24" is cool.

How was Shoe Creek? I haven't been up there in about a year and it was really rutted out after the 2nd and 3rd creek crossings. We normally go up there at least once a year to camp just after the 3rd crossing.

Did you go to the left after the 3rd crossing and back towards the humps and slick rock? Or did you just continue up to the right and through?

I participated in the MS City to Shore ride for my 4th year in a row. Not the best picture...but it's for a great cause.

I know there are some bicycle folks on the forum, the bike is a 2011 Jamis Ventura Race. Aluminum triangle, full carbon one piece fork/stem, carbon seat post with carbon on the back triangle as well. I added the bars for my aquabike (part of triathlon races) races.

It was a good time, I went there with the intention of trying slick rock and picture rock mostly, but it was so badly rutted out everywhere (I don't think a stock height vehicle could make it through) that I couldnt even get my front tires onto either obstacle without the bumper hitting first. That was kind of a bummer, but gives me a goal for the future..hopefully won't be as rutted out next time. I didn't go left after that crossing, I just continued straight through til I reached the parking lot for crabtree falls. I was unsure of where I could and couldn't go, so I just stayed to the main path because I've heard the property owners around the trail want it shut down due to trespassing. I ran Peter's Mill run and Tasker's Gap a couple weeks ago (my first time wheeling) and Shoe Creek was significantly more difficult than them.

Getting my front shocks replaced with a pair of Monroe shocks. What looked like a UBJ failure was actually the bottom bushings from the shocks. Could'nt ask for more from the shocks considering they were used for 164k miles. Next week, rear shocks since those are shot as well.

Friday my wife was driving the 4runner and got a check engine light and rough idle ... it stalled idling in gear at a light. I checked the code Saturday and it was a P0300 (random misfire) ... there was no cylinder associated with it. The idle in gear seemed too low 500-550 such that it was shaky. My plugs and wires are all fairly recent, and I cleaned the MAF about 3k miles ago with new stock filter. I read a bit on the site and decided to check for vacuum leaks (none found). So I pulled the throttle body and separated the IAC. I had cleaned the throttle body before and it still looked fine, but upon opening the IAC, it was really dirty ... lots of caked on carbon. I used a can of throttle body cleaner and brushes to get it all cleaned out. Put it back together, and it runs perfect now. During my test drive, the idle in gear was 650 and nice and smooth. After driving a bit, the check engine light went back off. I drove it some more yesterday and the idle is consistent between 600 and 700 sitting at lights in gear. So excited to fix it with the only expense being a $5 can of cleaner!

Added a JVC DVD player... $360 on Amazon (using AMEX reward points = free). Installed, but will need to do the whip mod (damn antenna motor).

For speakers, I picked up a complete second generation Scion tC speaker set from some one replacing their stock system for next to nothing (~$10). It included 6.5" and 5.25" woofers, as well as 1" tweeters. Scion sourced all the speakers from the Lexus LX -- perfect for a bare bones budget build. Guys on the Scion sites say you can put external amps (50 rms +, according to one guy) on these things before they start to fade. Also included some 6x9s, but they won't fit the third gen without moving some serious metal. Anyway... what a steal!

Also got some Dynamat on order for the doors and rear cargo area.

It is sad to hear that. I remember the first time I went up there was with a friend in a stock dakota and we made it through with only hitting once or twice...But that was 8 years or so ago.

We have never had issues with property owners but have had issues with the game warden/national forest officers. We had stopped on the trail to bs and stretch our legs, a group of guys came up from the other direction. So, we pulled off the trail as far as possible to let them by. We left the vehicles parked there after they went by and continued to B.S. About 5 minutes later the NF/game warden came by and gave us a huge lecture and some mandatory donation slips (tickets) for "driving in an area other than the designated trail". I used to love camping up there but saw how the trails were going downhill and didn't want to be associated with the fall, so we moved on to other areas to camp around Harrisonburg and Charlottesville.

That's by far the biggest PITA job I have done on my 4Runner... and I've done a lot of tedious things. Next time I wont fight it though, and just remove the flange like I should have done an hour sooner.


on a side note, I replaced my left rear door window motor, with barely any noticeable change, *sigh*. Also put some more LED's in.

i found a front bumper off a 97 T4R it doesnt have the limited flares but i really dont care, its only $50 bucks!! Will it bolt directly up to my 99 T4R?? i SURE HOPE Soo, i need some better aproach angles, and my front bumper looks like a ****!

A couple weeks ago I blew out a rear shock while launching my boat off the beach on the Columbia River to go salmon fishing. Well I replaced the old shocks with Tokico Trekmasters and got to try them out for the first time in semi off-road conditions. I love them, and I caught a few Chinook salmon today.

i found a front bumper off a 97 T4R it doesnt have the limited flares but i really dont care, its only $50 bucks!! Will it bolt directly up to my 99 T4R?? i SURE HOPE Soo, i need some better aproach angles, and my front bumper looks like a ****!

The '99+ 4Runners have a crash bar behind the "fat lip" portion of the bumper. Remove it and I think the older style will fit. Search for it though cus I'm not 100% sure.

The physical bumper mount at the frame rails is different... the pre-fat-lip have these cone things, where the fat-lip has flat plates with 3 or 4 mounting nuts welded to it... It's doable, but I think you need to deal with those plates somehow.
