What Did You Do To Your 3rd Gen Today?

Been wanting one of these for a long time, gonna get one soon.

But, my biggest debate has been, where do I put it? Your location is one that I thought of, but how did you mount it there, Millerad1651? That looks awesome! Will it shake off, off road?

I bought it with that little mount, and velcro'd the mount to the dash. Seems pretty secure so far. It is in that mount pretty tight...takes some effort to get it out for now. I'm curious to see how long the velcro will stay stuck to the dash. I'll let you know how it does.

The windshield is the one you look through to see where you're going. How is tinting it to 35% any different than wearing sunglasses? For the record, my side/back windows are tinted pretty dark (and even that affects night driving). Just sayin', it's illegal for a reason.

I finished up the elocker swap last night. I picked up a complete axle assembly from a wrecked '99 Highlander (green, 5 spd, elocker, 143K miles, no rust at all). It had the 4.1 gears I need for my 5 speed. The good news - the locker works great. :driving:

I used Inchworm's wiring kit and added a Marlin Crawler elocker guard. While I was in there, I put in new axle seals.

Random notes on the install, in case anyone uses this in the future:

- I used 1/8" vacuum tube to extend the locker breather, and routed it up next to the gas cap next to the rear diff breather. Thanks to Nelsonmd for his help here.
- The Inchworm wiring kit was pretty easy to use; it uses trailer wiring to connect the switch to the locker. Comes with everything you need, including switch, light, resistor, connectors, etc. I bought a crimper for the job. Only one issue - the fuse tap provided does not fit the mini fuses the T4R uses. I had to buy an add-a-fuse separately. Use a lighter on the shrink tubing.
- The Inchworm kit acts like a factory kit with the blue wire mod. You can enable the locker at any speed, in 2wd, 4hi or 4 lo. I think I will pick up a different switch to protect against accidental engagement (and my kids).
- I was able to lower the old axle housing and raise the new housing myself using ratcheting straps, a furniture dolly, and two 4x4's. Doing this job solo was pretty easy.
- You don't need to remove the sway bar, just disconnect it from the axle housing and loosen the end links.
- Thanks to BigFishAllDay - his build thread and notes on the locker swap were helpful. Also thanks to Nelsonmd for his input on extending the elocker breather tube.

Now some pix. First picture is the old housing, hanging from the straps & ready to lower onto the furniture dolly.

Yes, and a light tint (35%) drastically reduces headlight glare from oncoming traffic. You're really going to compare wearing a pair of sunglasses that are generally are tinted to roughly %5 or less to a windshield at 35%? That's comparing apples to oranges, but I appreciate your concern. Legallity has really nothing to do with it for me, but yes, it's illegal in a small part due to limiting sight at night. It's illegal due to safety concerns for police officers during traffic stops.

I'm pretty sure the legality around it is based off of driveability and safety; the police thing is secondary. If you want to discuss semantics, then I'll adjust my statement... would you wear TINTED GLASSES at night while driving? BTW, 35% is dark, especially when your other windows are tinted. It's your truck, I just don't think it's cool to carry out mods that serve such limited or questionable functional purpose AND risk others on public roads. Seeing where you're going is #2 in safety-importance, #1 being able to stop where you're going...

lol^^^ I just spent all day looking for a shop to pass my safety inspection because of my 20% tint on my front side windows. I even knew some guys that owned some of these shops and it still was a no go. I tried to unplug the windows and tell them they were broken and it didn't work either. I think too many people pull that card.

The tint looks great man, I love mine but holy cow what a hassle. I wouldn't tint the windshield. I know you said you have been accident free for 17 years but what if there was an accident, could they cite you for your illegal tint?

I've honestly never heard somebody whine so much about window tint. Semantics goes out the window when you're comparing apples to oranges, but your complaint has appropriately been filed in my "who gives a sh1t" file.

GottabeTRD, I have Veterans plates, my Dad is a local retired police officer, and I have a squeaky clean driving record. I don't get hassled much.

dang i wish i had that kind of hookup haha. I'm watching all these videos and reading all these forums on people getting busted for illegal tint and i'm freaking out! I too am one of those with a clean record. I actually got my 1st ticket of my life (I'm 30) a year ago in a small town for going 5 over. The judge let it slide and not go towards my record. :bravo:

Anyway, thank you for your service man. and do what ya gotta do!

My elocker quit working so I had to get to the bottom of it. Motor was still working but wasn't turning the main shaft. So took it apart with the help of a friend and cleaned it up real nice. Now it works more smooth than ever. Also greased all my u-joints and getting ready for a weekend at the offroad park!

went wheelin...

I'm not whining, I'm telling you it's stupid, sorry to upset you. Have fun with that.
