What Did You Do To Your 3rd Gen Today?

Spent yesterday swapping my front diff from a 4.10 to a 4:30 pulled from dismantler. Went out this morning to test it out….surprise surprise…its not working quite right. Went back to the dismantler after they assured me that it was my transfer case that must have issues…walked the yard with them and guess what…they sold me another set of 4.10's!!! :wtf::ybrick: FML. Luckily they had another 4Runner in the yard that I personally verified had the 4.30's. After the near impossible and HUGE PITA of swapping it once I decided to just pay to get it done tomorrow. Also, anyone who decides to swap their front diff themselves, DONT! It friggin sucks!! lol

I had NO idea. Its all really easy to get apart, until you have to try and get the driveline flange past the bell housing and steering knuckle, then I wanted to just take a sledge hammer to it. Ended up using a crowbar to flex out the engine mounts to give me the extra space needed to get it in/out. I will NEVER do the front diff again! Love working on my car, but not at the expense of the level of frustration I had. I definitely had a few beers after finishing up. lol:jump:

Mine wasnt bad when I did it a couple months ago. It wasnt an oil change but it honestly wasnt a big deal when I did it. What did you have problems with?

Drove to work, dumped a can of sea foam into the gas tank, washed it drove home. Watched it click over to 355, 300km's !

Mine wasnt bad when I did it a couple months ago. It wasnt an oil change but it honestly wasnt a big deal when I did it. What did you have problems with?

Getting the transfer case out/in is the worst. It gets stuck between the bell housing and the steering knuckle at the steering box. The output flange where the driveline bolts up is almost impossible to get past there. Had to use a pry bar to flex out the motor mounts to make it slide by. Just paid $300 today to have it put in while I was working, didn't wanna dick around with it again.

Bought My 4Runner Today!!!!

So my 4Runner wasn't actually mine before, I was just driving it. But when it broke down, the owner wrote it off and bought a new vehicle. He said if I paid for the work that had been done to diagnose the problem, the truck was mine. Well I paid for it and got it towed home!!!

The dash has a CEL, I think I found the reason why!


When my friend's garage is finished being rebuilt, all these parts will be put back on (and we'll figure out the preliminary issue).


While I get it fixed, I'm thinking about doing some mods like the external trans cooler, an electric fan, maybe even the ISR mod.

Im assuming you ment "differential" not "transfer case" lol.

It was a tight squeeze but about 5 min worth of twisting and wiggling and mine popped right out.

Either way, I understand you taking it somewhere. Sometimes its easier just to let someone else deal with it. I may end up doing the same thing when I put my new transmission in.

Ya, differential. Oops. Lol. And idk, maybe my motor is mounted slightly closer than the norm, because there was no 5minute wiggling to get mine out. Wish there was, would of saved a TON of frustration and $$. Lol
