Didn't drive it
Loaded up the pup and my stuff to head to work, noticed 30 seconds after starting that I was already smelling burnt oil, strong. I had left my skid plate on like a doofus during last week's oil change and while I had smelled burning oil, I assumed it was still burning off on the bottom of the engine with what was left in the pan.
Except this is now like 150 miles later and after one significant water crossing... and so soon after turning the engine on?
Popped hood, smoking. Flashlight on passenger side revealed oil dripping on exhaust, from valve cover area. I had tried to tighten my valve covers again since I noticed they were leaking worse last week, but the bolts spun freely and never snugged up. Shrugged it off thinking at least I had tried, they shouldn't be any worse. Guess it's worse. Ordered everything for vc gasket change including PCV valve, gasket, half moon things, the whole shebang.
Looks like she won't be moving for a while. Smell is too strong to tolerate.

Weren't you looking for one some time back? A pic or two is needed.
The GX470 is one nice machine. If it didn't drink gas, I'd sell my 4runner for one. Other than the air suspension that goes after 100k or so, the rear wheel bearings went on my friend's gx470 so they upgrade to a 570. Not as refined as the 470 IMHO, especially in the interior.

I have been, ya. It seems they're all really beat up, or clean with no maintenance history with a ridiculous price tag. I finally found a one owner 03 with all the maintenance records in pretty good shape. I'll work my paint magic in a few spots and it'll be good as new. I wanted a silver one with dark interior and most I found were silver with tan. I pick it up Monday, I'll post a few pics.

The 4runner was off road once, and I worried about scratching it the whole time, haha. Besides, I have this for off-roading;

Reckon ya don't need much more than that... looks like it will also get you into those hard to reach hunting/fishing spots. I'm sure the new ride will pull it along nicely.... I aint kidding anybody either..My runner has been off the road about as much as yours and like you I was worried about scratches, salt water and getting stuck..

Actually I feel the same way until I get that 1st one. Living in WA, most trails are tight. My runner now was glossy black, now it looks like it got molested by some chic with long @$$ nails!

I know the feeling.... I knew a buddy of mine had a Vette that he only took out on special occasions. He decides to take it out on a date.. The Woman he went out with gouged the kick panels with her heels... and popped the seat with the rivets or what ever they are called from her jeans when she sat down.

Drove on the highway today...and actually enjoyed the ride.
In the past year I've replaced inner and outer tie rods, LBJ's, steering rack, suspension, both cv's, lubed the driveshaft,TBU, etc. Put new 265/75/16's on 2 weeks ago and had tires balanced.
So now when I'm on the highway it's smooth as silk. Soooo happy with the handling and road feel. No shakes or shimmys at any speed.

Yeah, I'm sure we all could have a 2017 8 wheel drive something or other with 900HP sitting in the driveway.. I like my Runner. I don't win any races at the traffic light- or at the gas pump. They don't require too much maintenance. if you were lucky enough to have your 3rd Gen from the Jump.. I have found that with Basic TLC- It's a friend for life.. Tell you what.. she has been more reliable than most of the Women I know.

That B/M TC... I had the dealer install one when I first got the truck... while under there the other day I noticed the TC mounts were starting to rot away... is that B/M A GOOD ONE?

bolted down my 1st gen roll bar cargo basket today, used some silicon on the bolts where they go through the floor to keep things water tight. man i love this mod, its so nice keeping things organized/neat and contained. its gonna have to come out one more time to get painted but then after that its gonna be completely done. ill probably wait till spring or summer to do that though.

fabricated some lower profile mounts for my ROLA VORTEX RACK after welding an extension on it to give some extra length. i used the original mounts and cut them in 1/2..
reused the cross rail crew caps to secure the 4 sides... wanted to have 4 on each side.. total of 8.. but the curvature of the roof made this very difficult.
any advice to compensate for the curvature of the roof?

no offense, but I hope you don't plan on putting much of a load on that rack expecting those welds to hold it...
